I'm trying to persuade friends to buy these games, and given their addictive nature, I think a free weekend would be a great method of selling these games to them.

I know you can buy and then refund, but people are always wary about that, and two hours is not really enough to learn the game anyway.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think there's anything against a free weekend, just an idea :)

Another possibility is to create a "Lite" version of the game. The game as the basic features, but you are restricted on what you can do, but without sacrificing the play-ability of the game. Barring this, a free weekend is very useful. I decided against buying Civilization. I actually owned I and II back in the day, but I didn't like the modern versions of the game.

For now Paradox is dependent on "let's Play" and "Tutorials." There ad videos are complete crap.

If you all use Steam, you could try the family sharing. It would let them play your games as long as you don't play yourself at the same time, and vice-versa. Better watch a tuto online to see how to proceed.

If you don't have Steam I guess a free week-end is indeed the best bet.

...Or that particular link....
Afraid anyone will open that one map?
Or that specific folder...

You people... ;)

No, it's because I'm a bit OCD about my mouse and keyboard. To be honest though, it's not easy to invite someone over anyway when they live five hours away :p

Yeah, there was a CK2 demo.

There was an EU4 free weekend a while ago, and I managed to convince my friend to buy the game after a multiplayer game.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think there's anything against a free weekend, just an idea :)

I would never borrow my laptop to anyone. But more so, why would I invite a friend over just so their ass can hog my laptop, play a game, and not talk to me? The purpose of inviting friends over is to socialize. These type of games require full concentration and conversing while playing them is not optional. When I was in college, I'd bring my laptop home over Christmas and the worst thing was trying to play a game like EUIV and have my dad start talking to me about the weather outside. "I'll talk to you in a minute Dad. Right now, I am busy trying to absorb those nasty Livonians into my empire!" All while my dad thinks "I wonder if it's time to send Lokius to the mental institution for evaluation?"

Of course the purpose of inviting friends over is to socialize, but the OP wants to convince his friends to start playing the game as well, which by the way is not a thing I've tried to do. (I simply conformed with their choice of games for multiplayer as that's much easier and just as much fun, just a bit more expensive (as you'll need a wider library))
All I said was, that by letting others use your pc to play the game which is less dependent on others. The OP wasn't comfortable with that idea, fine, no shots fired...

I didn't find your suggestion unreasonable at all if your willing and proximity is not a problem.
