Can we buy inventions with gold?

Multiple references in the game text describe innovation points as a free way to buy inventions. This implies that there is a non-free way to buy inventions, e.g. by using gold. But I can't find such a method and the invention screen only mentions spending innovation points.

Unhelpful, but i dont know. I dont think so. This text may well be residue after earlier 2.0alpha versions before they decided to completely move to innovation points for inventions - prior versions used gold as the standard cost for all inventions.

According to a couple of reviews of the new 2.0 released yesterday, they removed gold. It’s all innovation points from researchers... Starting yesterday.

Yep I sort of suspected as much, that it was left over text from when inventions were purchased in some kind of hybrid system.
