Some AI cheating I get, like map hax. Some is understandable even if not absolutely necessary, like the free leader and diplomat. Some is a poor crutch for lacking scripting or programming, like native uprising protections. Some is potentially necessary but hard to say because it's so god-awfully poorly implemented, like naval attrition without any safety checks such as range or phantom attrition damage or not disabling AI immunity during circumnavigation attempts.

I, too, made a thread about this issue and a dev replied saying this is WAD. It's so dumb that the game goes back to desktop now every time you go to the main menu. Probably the dumbest change in 1.14 patch.

A. Is certainly false, b is subjective. Multiple examples of strategy games with non-cheating AI. Supreme commander 1 is one of my very favorite strategy games for this reason. There are usually thousands of units on screen at any time. They allow a choice between cheating AI and non. It is just poor philosophy.
How many computer opponents are there, controlling those thousands of units?

A dozen or so. But EU IV ai only need to control a few stacks.

And process triggers and modifiers and events and decisions and ideas and technologies and rulers and heirs and royal marriages and diplomatic relations and tax and production and trade and manpower and diplomacy and... for a few hundred tags and a couple of thousand provinces.

I am not an AI programmer unfortuantely. All I am trying to say is that other games do non-cheating AI just fine. Supreme Commander routinely maxes out the ram a 32 bit app can use while eu iv never does, yet EU IV still lags late game on an i7-6700k/R9 295X2 system (so does CK2) Clearly there is some room for improvement, most computers have 4+ GB of RAM now a days anyway. This is a niche game, indeed, the whole company is in a niche. You can expect, I think, that people will have more capable systems. Maybe if they didn't charge inordinate sums for their DLCs people would have better computers? Idk.

Comparing an 'inordinate sum' ($20) for a DLC to a $500-$750 capable system (by this I mean a decent laptop) is really comparing apples to oranges. The cost of EU4 + all DLC wouldn't buy someone a decent system. It's like not it costs $500 to buy everything of EU4 that exists on the market.

Of course there is room for improvement with optimisation but considering AI has to handle multiple functions of processing, for several hundred tags, on several thousand provinces, you can't compare Supreme Commander to any of the Paradox games. They're different beasts entirely. Different functions, different outcomes, different necessities.

If you game on a laptop you are doing it wrong. Try $400 desktop. Also supcom seems pretty similar to me. They are both strategy titles firstly, and EU IV is several years newer than SupCom I, so it should be able to do more. Still, Controlling thousands of land/sea/air units analogous to provinces, etc. and $20 DLC after $20 DLC will really add up after a time.

When I consider how much gametime I've sunk into EU4, those $20 DLCs seem like pretty good value.

Most have been €15, haven't they? And even then I don't think I've ever bought one at RRP, but waited for a Steam sale (the first is usually about the same time as the bugs are ironed out :)).

I don't care what PD says in defense of the restart nonsense, but it blows chunks

And now Pop/Pause does not actually Pause...it is driving me crazy

If you game on a laptop, a good laptop is able to handle EU4 just fine. All three of my previous ones have not been very high end but have been able to churn out EU4 solidly even to end of the game, so no, I am not 'doing it wrong'. A $400 desktop is better equipped to handle it for the price, sure, but so is a decently specced $600 one with the CPU/GPU capabilities to process it. EU4 sticks to a formula that Paradox have been using since the beginning. While I miss the old policy of just expansions or patches adding new content, the reality of today is that DLC makes more money, and if they are adding content to the DLC and having to sacrifice or modify, that's their policy. Not every DLC is $20 (at least the early ones weren't), and they are not mandatory, just add on value more than anything else.

Whilst the similarity exists between SupCom I and EU4 that they are both strategy games at their base form, I respectfully disagree that they are any bit further than that. They are different games, very different.

That said, I disagree with restart upon exit. Not a fan. But if it's a stopgap, then it works. Even if not, it's not something game breaking for myself although it may be for others.

Its especially annoying if u need a good start (rivals and so on) to tackle a hard achievement. ie. granada/byz. now u have to restart the freaking game everytime.

I game on a laptop and I run Eu4 fine if not perfectly. It is called a gaming laptop for a reason..it plays games and plays them fine. so No I am not doing it wrong because quite honestly I prefer a laptop over a desktop any day. But that is because i have gotten use to playing games on my laptop. Now mine you my laptop is a High end gaming one. In range of around 900 or so dollars
