Can the Pope become Emperor?

Doesent anyone play for the glory of their country anymore? Its a prestige thing, and should be high on any catholic's list. As for bribing everyone up to 200+, means nothing if Austria isn't being a bad boy, damn Habsburg bonus will steal it every time. My Polands have all come up against this damned Habsburg bonus.

I once annexed Austria as France and controlled the south of the HRE. The HRE was formed only by the Protestant countries in the north, so, no catholic country was in the HRE, and Spain didn't form correctly, so, instead of Castile, Aragon, ... an african country (catholic of course) was elected as emperor.

I forgot, I also controlled all Italy (Pappal states included).

I don't remember the exact country, but I think no Protestant state will be elected while there are catholic countries.

Kinda surprised Kleves didn't end up as HRE, but maybe they had poor relations with their neighbors. Looks like the HRE has basically become the North German Confederation anyway.

Being the badboy of the world as England and owning most HRE provinces, The Duke of Athens (had reformed catholic from Spain during a long war) was elected Holy Roman Emperor. But compared to Ashanti, it must be seen as really normal!

IIRC I've seen a thread on this before and that the Teutonic Order and Prussia are parts of the HRE.

In a game I played as the Papal States 5 of my popes got to be HR Emperor. It was a somewhat odd game as Spain never formed. Also Castile was divided by England and Portugal, Aragon taken by france and Austria taken by the best AI played game I ever saw the Ottomans do though I eventually got most of Austria from them. Without the bonuses Spain and Austria get its quite common for another catholic to get HR Emperor and I at the time had great releations with all catholic countries. Would likely have kept it long but went on a crusade though the holy land and north africa sending my BB through the roof.

So has anyone else ever seen Nippon go CRC in the event they get and then later become HRE? This could be one of the wierdest things I've ever seen(sorry, no screenie ).
