I recall differently... I once conquered the HRE (on easy setting :D) as Turkey and didn't become emperor...

too bad you can't be sultan and emperor at the same time... and then diplo-annex Spain to top it off

Lots of nations France for example and non Christian nation cannot hold land in the HRE. When you take a province in the HRE you will notice on the religious map that it is no longer part of the HRE.

Still, France can indeed become the HR Emperor... (if it stays catholic)

as long as your catholic, you got a chance

you could bride all the electors, or, my favorite way, just annex everything in sight till you are able to elect yourself Holy Roman Emperor with nobody left to say otherwise

Native American nations can be Emporer as well. ;) Not usually the case. If France owns all the HRE provinces there is in effect no HRE so the title is only good for the VP points which most players find meaningless anyway.

I recently played a game as Brandenburg. I had conquered all of the german provinces outside of Austria (the province), while the Netherlands and Switzerland were independant (the Swiss were my vassals), Bohemia controlled Sudeten, Bohemia, and Moravia, and France owned Savoy, Lombardia, Liguria, and Modena. So all that was left was Brandenburg, Austria, Bohemia, Helvetia, and Tuscany within the HRE. Bohemia and I were Protestant, Helvetia was Reformed, Austria and Spain were CRC, and Tuscany was Catholic. I bribed Austria, Spain, and Bohemia up to 200, which was higher than either was with anyone else. But guess who became the Emperor? Austria. So I finished them off, and the new Emperor was *drum roll please* Spain! Now, I had to have had my vote plus Bohemia's, Spain only had itself's, and Tuscany and Helvetia didn't count. How big are these Hapsburg bonuses? Do they get to vote for themselves more than once? If so, who would recognize it? Is there anyway for a Protestant/Reformed ruler to become the Emperor without wiping out Spain?

The HRE is always Catholic unless there are absolutely no Catholic countries left anywhere on Earth. After that, I think it will take other Christian countries. In early versions of the game this may not have been as strict.

What it boils down to now is that if you want to be HRE, you essentially need to be Catholic. Wiping out all of the Catholic countries in the game, while not impossible, will destroy your reputation and relations so badly that you would never be elected were you to become eligible.

Unless you're the only remaining HRE elector...;)

VP's might be generally meaningless but i find them to be a reasonable guide of how well a country has or is performing.
