The quicker it catches up, the less Influence it produces for you.
In turn the bigger it is, the more influence it costs to integrate:
Base cost: 20
Per Planet: +50
Per pop: +10
And the rate is fixed at 5/month.

If you do not mind the Influence at all? Certainly.
But that and land is the main reason to Uplift them in the first place.

The thing is, apart from influence I also uplift to gain pops I can colonize planets with. Those protectorates you want to become vassals ASAP.

Eh.. They probably can, but after several games of ironman I've still never seen any of my single-planet protectorates catch up. And I've had dozens of them, because I tend to play as pacifist liberator.

The game ends long before protectorates start catching up.
5. That is the amount of free Research every emprie gets.
95%. That is the reduction in reserach cost price protectorates get in 1.4.1
A tech with a 360 base needed 72 months to finish (likely a bit less, as Skill and Traits from the researchers affect that).
For the protectorate, that cost is cut to 18. 4 months. Thier reserach speed is literally 20 times yours. And not like thier buildup will be stifeled new building tech not becomming avalible.

The thing is, apart from influence I also uplift to gain pops I can colonize planets with. Those protectorates you want to become vassals ASAP.
True. That might be the main reason to have them go to Vassal.
I realy hope there will be a rework of the Vassal States/Pre-FTL interaction. To allow us to get pops from protectorates.

Yes, and it takes me less time to keep on researching new techs. So they never catch up before the game ends.
...maybe it happens in larger galaxies, but I don't play those in ironman. Too laggy.
You want to tell me that you are research endgame technology in less then 4 months a piece? Inlcuding the repeatable stuff, with increaseing cost? And with all the penalties for having a large empire?

The game is usually over long before I get far into the repeatable techs.
And I don't go for larger empires, precisely because it ruins your research. Instead I stick to as few planets as possible, and spam research stations and research deals. Plus the bonus from Neural Network Administration, and edicts. Which amounts to about seven months per endgame tech.
