I am playing as the Byzantine and Holy Roman Emperor. I am planing to mend the Great Schism, as well as restore the Roman Empire. Of course, on of the duchies I need to take is Latium (including Rome) the seat of the Papacy. I have been playing for 99 years, and Latium is 1 year away from drifting into the Papacy. If the Papacy gets de jure lands, then can I usurp it after I take those de jure lands? The reason I want to know right now is because if I cannot usurp it, then I will just create the Kingdom of Italy and press those de jure claims on the counties of Latium, providing me with a convenient casus belli. However, if I wait 1 more year I will no longer be able to press that De Jure cassus belli, and will have to use my Chancellor to fabricate claims. Its not that my 34 diplomacy Chancellor will take a long time, but because I have 200 income per month, it is extremely expensive to fabricate claims, so I would like to avoid that option if possible.
One of my vassals has a claim on a county in Latium. If I press that claim, it would prevent Latium from drifting into the Papacy, and I could create Italy and press de jure claims on the other counties. Of course, I could just create Italy now and press de jure claims on Rome. But I really want to usurp the Papacy and be known as the orthodox pope.
My question is: Can I usurp the papacy, or should I just take it now?
