Hello, I just started playing and after having conquered the Balkans and some of Turkey with Bulgaria, I wanted to try Morocco and found them to be an excellent trading nation. However, I'm trying to colonize (successfully done one, two in progress), but it seems I can't get conquistadores or explorers since I set leaders to historical. No idea why I did that but as I said, just started playing :p

Anyone know if I can change the options through text files or something? Can't do it the load game menu atleast.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Yes, but you have to edit the save file. Probably should just start over, unless you are having the campaign of your life.

However, I don't know if you can change leaders setting or rather if the change will actually take effect.

Open up your save with a text editor of some type (notepad will do fine). At the very beginning of the save's text, you'll see something that looks like this:

The X's will be replaced by a series of numbers that represent your settings. I don't remember the order of the settings myself, but if you start a new test game with the settings you desire, save, open that save file, and then copy and paste the numbers into your current game's save, the new settings will take effect. Historical leaders means that some aspects of the game such as current leaders and rulers will only change once they die in game, but they will eventually supplant the current historical ones with random ones.

Start a new game and choose the options you want, then save it. Open the save game with a notepad, and you will notice some numbers in a bracket at the top of the page. Copy the numbers, open your Moroccan game and paste it over the numbers in that save.

Ages ago, I played around with this. I don't remember just which ones cause problems, but there are certain options which can mess up the game. I do know that changing difficulty works fine, as does colonist size and spy cost. I think the leader/advisor options are problematic.

Thanks everybody, got it to work! Colonized all of the coast of West Africa, and looking forward to a chance of annexing Sogu and perhaps Sokoto.

@ George LeS: Yes, I found out that you can't hire any leaders (generals, conquistadors, explorers, admirals) if you set it to event or historical, atleast not for Morocco and most others (Spain for example can hire conquistadores when leader is set to historical, if I understand correctly). Advisors can of course be "made" by spending tradition but that quickly deplets you of tradition.

Spain can't hire conquistadores as well. No one can. You only get historical leaders. The difference is that Spain has historical conquistadores, while most other nations don't.
But yeah, using historical leaders is not recommened, as the game either follows exact historical precedent or breaks down, EU2 style.

No one ever said anything about achievements being disabled if a saved game is edited :(
Should be obvious; how can achievements be valid if you can edit the savegame to make any situation you want? There's no way for the game to know you only edited the starting options.
