They can colonize any planet with technology, but they will get a happiness debuff the more a planet differs from their homeplanet. Humans from Earth, a continental planet, will be miserable on planets that are not oceanic, tropical or continental.

You can lessen this effect through some events, some species traits and some planet modifiers, which can decrease or increase habitability. You can also terraform planets to be more useful to your race.

Planets that are not adjacent to your homeworld type (ocean and tropicla are adjacent to continental, and vice versa) are poor candidates for settlement.

You can colonize every planet from the start (I think), but your POP will only be happy on the starter world you choose (eg. continents, arid, tundra, etc.) untill you get more tech that boosts hability and happiness.

This is incorrect. Look at how the Blorg needed specific tech to colonize Ocean worlds in the stream.

Additional tech and adaptive traits will make your guys less unhappy, but having robots or a mixed species empire will be typically more viable, as long as you can keep them in check.

You have to research how to colonize planets that aren't your home type. A tropical species will not only be happiest on a tropical planet, but will only be able to colonize tropical worlds if you do not research how to colonize other varieties.
You will be absolutely miserable on Desert and Tundra worlds regardless, but you can get modifiers through Tech, Events, and Traits to make them a little less unhappy.

The only thing that makes humans special is that they look like you, by game logic they are just another mammalian alien. That and they get Sol.
