I'm playing Utrecht in my first game of EUIV, and I'm very curious to know whether I've somehow missed out on Dutch Unification! The real historical date for it has already passed (23 January 1579)—in my game it's now 1601. I know the game is in the business of creating alternative histories, not the real succession of events; but I'm wondering whether it's been set up in such a way that sooner or later major events like that do take place. Otherwise I guess my little Utrecht will get annihilated in the Napoleonic wars!

I think as a player you have to actively unite the provinces and form the Netherlands.
As far as I know there is no event that allows you to unite with other states around you into the Netherlands.

Is that what you meant?

there is a series of nasty events which will usually cause it to occur (briefly) if the area is under AI control. It usually gets eaten again shortly after.

Under player control, you need to make it happen by collecting the needed provinces and there is a button under the "decisions" tab which forms it. It will also tell you exactly the requirements to form it.

Sounds like you need to core

  • Owns core provinces Breda (95), Amsterdam (97), Utrecht (98), Gelre (99) and Den Haag (4383)
  • and five more cores in the low country area.

If you aren't an elector, it will kick you out of the HRE and France will come knocking for your provinces. They are pretty mean, but not as bad as they were (relatively) a few years ago.

Yes, thanks — that answers my basic question. As someone said below, the conditions are set out in the Netherlands Unification button under Decisions. So that's what I need to be looking at. But what you're saying is that it's basically up to me to satisfy those, the game isn't going to just suddenly announce that there's a new nation 'The Netherlands' and Utrecht is now part of it!

Thanks, that makes it very clear! In my game I think I have zero chance of meeting any of those requirements except for Utrecht! So I'll continue in solitary splendour and hope for the best!

you got another 200 years of game bro, make friends with some locals, call them in for a war against flanders or holland or w/e, and in the peace deal force vassalize them. Vassals are much nicer than allies.

OK, sounds like a plan! Thanks for the comment about vassals—haven't tried that before. Will see how it goes!

the game isn't going to just suddenly announce that there's a new nation 'The Netherlands' and Utrecht is now part of it!
not without your troops hearing about it first.

Generally speaking, the game leaves nation formations in the hands of the players. Some get help - like Poland getting its union over Lithuania to help it form the Commonwealth - but most have to do it the hard way; conquer the required provinces.

You can check your missions in the nation's ledger (the one you opened in twitter thread about the money) and check your missions (the little green flag).
O-o-o-o-o-h! Light dawns. So that thing you open when you click the flag is called the Ledger? I've been hearing about it and wondering what it was! Yes, OK, I see the green flag and the missions. I haven't been giving them much importance, but I see there that there are two more missions below "Unite the Lowlands" that I need to complete… Hah. Quite a mission indeed!
