Adventurers have the ability to hang out on the map without having any land. Is there any actual limitation to the game keeping mercenaries from appearing in their home county on the map?

Could we update the system so they walk from their home and are always on the map?

Can we also add religious heads without a holding to the map? That way I could just kill the Pope towards the end of games, rather than having him declare Crusades from the void against me.

I feel as though it would be far easier if the pope was just given a bisphoric by the AI for a bunch of piety

This is completely doable. As an experiment open the console and go to observer mode then zoom down until you can see all the armies on the map - you will see literally thousands of them. Adding 70-80 more would pose minimal load on the system.

+1 completely agree !

You can already get religious heads without a holding in CK2, just declare war on the Pope, take Rome and form Italy; you have a landless Pope. Also that doesn't really agree with how history saw the Papacy.

Well you totally misunderstood what I was saying.

If I wipe out Catholicism there will still be a Pope, sitting somewhere in the void calling Crusades against me in regular intervals, without me being able to siege him down, due to him being in some abstract "void" space. This is long after Rome was conquered and it's churches burnt to the ground and the Pope has been hosted by several other Catholic rulers before they too fell before the Heathern onslaught...

So pretty irrelevant how "history saw the Papacy" when it's a completely Alternate History scenario where the Papacy and Catholicism have been eradicated....

Not if there aren't any Catholics left on the map...which was the situation I was talking about

If Catholicism is so severely weakened, Crusades will fail to garner enough support in their pledge time to actually start the war.

Part of the reason the papacy will always exist is because there are a number of maintenance events and whatnot that fire for him in order to have things like the Sunset Invasion happen.

The last time I wiped out Catholicism, which admittedly was before Holy Fury, he was able to endlessly send some small army against me.
Don't know if that has changed since HF, but it was extremely annoying due to putting me into a prolonged state of war at regular intervals that forced me to wait and repeadedly battle small armies, since there was no holdings I could siege down.

Ah thanks, I withdraw my suggestion then.

Make the pope you vassal. Then you are safe.
Except....I'm obviously not playing a Catholic in those games so 1)vassalizing the Popoe is impossible 2) It'd be pretty weird for a non-Catholic Empire to keep the head of a dead/hostile religion in a position of power.

I highly doubt you will ever see a Papacy destruction event in the game. The game and many mods have several events that target the Pope for maintenance because 1) he always exists and 2) he is never a player character. Without these events, the game breaks. It would be a large, largely worthless endeavor on Paradox's part to fix their system to retarget them to Bilbo the Homeless Immortal that you can't find in the character finder; and an impossible task to fix all the mods that also require his existence. This kind of thing won't happen until CK3 is my guess.

Well they could at least prevent the pope from calling crusades when there are say, less than 15 catholic provinces left

The current mechanics of crusade cancellation without sufficient sponsorship already effectively cause this (unless the crusade target is exceptionally weak and without religious allies, in which case such a crusade isn't a lost cause)

Back to the original question, I think this would be perfect! Especially now that raising mercenaries often causes them to walk from their home province, which can be all the way over at the China edge of the map. At least if they were already on the map, we could decide which band to hire that would arrive at our war in under 3 years...

Ah thanks, I withdraw my suggestion then.

Except....I'm obviously not playing a Catholic in those games so 1)vassalizing the Popoe is impossible 2) It'd be pretty weird for a non-Catholic Empire to keep the head of a dead/hostile religion in a position of power.

I do it all the time. I convert for a werk, give back rome, set up an antipope and press his claim. Easy. Then you can still take all his holdings amd give it to loyal pagans or whatever you play with.
