Can Byzantines Call Holy wars?

i means crusades and Jihads not holy war for duchys.....like the fatimids and Seljuks (persians,seljuks died off) CONSTANTLY try to Kingdoms like Egypt (Fatimids) and Armidia (Persians) thats alot beter than the little duchy holy wars.....is there one like that Byzantines.

What are the advantages of the Orthodox church? I can't assign the church's heir and summon holy orders like the Catholics. The Patriarch seems so useless compare to the power of the Pope, the Pentarchy seems to be titles only and absolutely useless in terms of monetary value?

Orthodox powers didn't call crusades. Only the Pope can launch crusades (after 1090) and the two Caliphs after 1187.

The Patriarchate is and was pretty much what it was meant to be - a spiritual post - and not one that calls wars and rules its own state.

One of the differences between the Orthodox and Catholic churches, iirc, is that the Orthodox church never developed a doctrine of crusades or holy wars. Wars and military matters were the sole jurisdiction of the emperor, the church had no part other than the usual support it gave to the state and emperor.

Aye, Orthodox/Miaphysite have some nifty perks. As a liege, you have free excommunications on all people who share your religious head. If you avoid the pentarchy, this means everyone in your realm and independents in your de jure kingdom who arent kings, along with being immune to excommunications. This alone is ridiculously awesome, and much more useful than any Crusade or invasion on a larger target.

And if youre Orthodox, you can mend the schism... nothin like making everyone either a closer ally or holy war target. Sadly, the Pentarchy as Miaphysites or Orthodox/Miaphysites heretics doesnt seem to be much more than a fun goal. A goal Im close to: Nubia holds Alexandria, Jerusalem, and Antioch.

Advantages of Orthodox Church: Be able to excommunicate anyone that is Orthodox, since the head of the religion is you vassal. And then, if they are a threat, imprison the excommunicated person. No one will care, since they're excommunicated.

And if you are able to mend the Schism, Catholic is declared a heresy of Orthodox. And when I mended it, almost all the Christian super powers switched to Orthodox.

nope although i wish the byzantine imperial reconquest CB was reworked(AND MAKE IT WORK AGAINST THE SELJUKS) make it only work on de jure ERE territory(ontop of the levant and northern egypt) then make it work in western europe after its reconquered.

Youre correct, Orthodoxy is the 'weakest' of the major religions in expansion and financial respects. Byzantium is AMPLY compensated for this through LOR stuff, but if you were min-maxing a Rus empire, converting to Catholicism wouldn't be dumb.
