I played EU a bit, but not much. I got EU2 a while ago, but forgot I had it, and just found it again. I forget how to play an EU game. I read the rules and understand a bit of it.

Here is my problem. I keep playing like it's a Civ game lol. I guess I am so use to starting with one settler wich turns into one city and then I start from there. I am not use to the whole world is already colonized. I am not having fun doing what I normally do in a Civ game.

So my question is, how do I play. I tried playing Croatia since it's small, and I could learn from there. I thought not having alot of units, I would know what I have and build from there. But I am surronded all over the place. I guess I am to use to exploring with nobody around, but I can't do that now, so should I build up and then delcare war and expand that way? What should I be doing? Maybe someone can give me a little help abit on what they do turn to turn. Or maybe there is a link someone can give me and I can read there. I have the same problem playing HoI2 as well.

Also I remember in EU I can play alone with nobody around almost like a Civ game that way, can I do that in EU2 as well?

Any help or tips you can give me, I will appreciate it greatly.

There should be plenty of old treads regarding this, and the EUII wiki has plenty of information too :)

But the two golden tips:

1) For a starting country pick Spain, France or England in the 1495 scenario.

2) Expect to fail in the beginning, this game does have step learning curve. After you have been defeated 10 times or so, you should begin to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I thought picking a smaller country would be easier to manage, since I like playing with starting with one province and then expanding that way. Can this be done with EU2? Maybe through mods? I keep hearing about mods, where can I go for these?

Thanks for your fast reply. I am reading other threads as I am typing this. So much to read, I thought maybe it would be easier if someone else can show me the right way to go. I will check out the EU2 wiki.

Mods are in the User Mods sub-forum http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=63 . But you don't need a mod to play a small country, just right-click on any starting country in any scenario and you'll get a list of other countries you can play. However small countries are harder; yes there is less to manage, but you can so easily get crushed with no way to recover.

Ah I see, Fantasy scenario is where you start with a single province. What confuses me, is why can you only choose those provinces that are listed? I thought if I right clicked on them, I could choose who ever I wanted. Is this the case, or am I missing something where you can pick who ever you want in Fantasy? I can't see being limited to 8 or so choices.

I have downloaded this game from a gaming site if that makes a difference.

FANTASY SCENARIO
_________________

Fantasy scenario is a whole different game to EUII. Indeed here you'll start with one province and start colonizing, but it's by far not as rewarding or fun imo as a civ game. In the Fantasy scenario you can't choose any other countries by right-clicking.

EU HISTORICAL SCENARIO
______________________

To get the real EUii experience you should start a historical scenario. As a noobie, the 1492 scenario as France would be a good start to get to know the game.

The game isn't turn-based, as in civ-games. Time keeps running. You can pause and adjust speed settings by using "pause" and ctrl + or ctrl -.

YOUR ARMY
-----------

Watch your troop support limit, as this is the most tricky part for noobies. You can only have so much ships or troops, or you'll start paying (much) more for their upkeep. This is why it is advised to start with a somewhat larger (richer) country.

Also, there's an "upkeep slider" with which you can choose to pay your troops fully 100% or anything up to 50%. When you are not at war (or even at war, but not engaging the enemy) keep the bar to the left (=50%)

You can see the 50% as their pay, and 100% as a special bonus to your troops for going to fight. How much you pay them affects their morale. Beware, however, morale will only change when you've closed the slider menu, and after it's a new month.

YOUR ECONOMY
---------------

Try to mint as little as possible. It will give you inflation, and with the bigger countries you'll get enough money every 1st of january to make some necessary purchases.

Start promoting bailiffs in your provinces and you will see your income grow, year by year.

Trade only becomes profitable after trade level 3, don't use autosend for merchants.

In the beginning of the game you will probably be poor. Research infrastructure and trade first. Research one thing fully at the time.

BATTLES
--------

In the early phases cavalry is what you want! Until your enemies have land tech 9 you can easily kill off enemy infantry stacks with a smaller cavalry army. Just think of it as your knightly army.

When you feel you get the hang of it, definitely try out multiplayer, that's where this game comes to its full right imo. If everything i wrote is Chinese to you, play some more and you'll find out.

If you want an explorer game you can pick Portugal though. Finish the war you are in, ally with Spain and after a few years you get your first explorer. Both Africa and america is mostly only inhabitant by a few natives, that can be either cleared of taken in as a part of your city.

Spain got lots of exploreres and conquistadors, but not before you had your go for a few decades. They are more powerfull if you want to try a bit of warmonging to build up some money to build up tradeingpost and colonies.

If you go for heavy colonicing go for TP first. They are cheaper and mostly easier to succed with. They increase your trade income a good deal and doesn't increase your tech costs. Only build a few colonies here and there as pit stops, until you find an area where you want to make your main area to invest in. (hint, high value gods like, wine, sugar, exoctic gods etc are best TP, but when you choose colonies, look for the base tax instead).
