Well, IIRC the King of Prussia was offered the Crown, but didn't want it "from the gutter". If one were to accept this offer as a human player, one would also have to accept a more democratic Germany, probably. And that's not the reason most of us would want to unite Germany I think! :D

I think other reasons for the Purssian king played their part as well.
Like, for example, the conservative states Russia and Austria at the borders, who were willing to crush any revolution springing up close to their borders.
Or France, which, with Napoleon III as its head, wouldn't want a united, strong Germany...

If they could win at Custoza or Novara why wouldn't they get some sort of unification going? Surely it would be possible to win these battles in a game situation.

It would seem the unified-German state had great potential to succeed, barring the delay from the National Assembly at Frankfurt(and Friedrich Wilhelm IV's intervention). I think in the event there would have to be the option of assassinating FWIV :)

Actually, Napoleon III thought a united Germany was a good idea, and he even went to war to help create a united Italy. From a French perspective, it made no sense, but Napoleon was preoocupied with reordering Europe along nationalist lines, and making himself "Arbiter of Europe" in the process.

Events in France tipped it all off AFAIR. Napoleon III became emperor after most of it died down, did he not? And lastly, I think that as popular as the "crown from the gutter" quote is, the King of Prussia actually made reference to a dog collar. It's been a while though.

Given that most of the revolts were ultimately ephemeral, they might be represented by states forming loose-alliances (Federal Germany) and having their domestic policy settings, or the Vic equivalent, tossed around wildly.

The papacy certainly supported it, and so did the French.

Mmm. Russians were in hungary. I wonder if they'd go into italy too.
