Hi, all in the title really. If like me you want armoured cars back in and not just recon units then have your say!

A very emotive subject and with lots of different points of view but if we can get enough support then perhaps the Devs will listen.

So please, if you want ARMOURED CARS back in HOI4 just AGREE with me or give a short response to keep this thread up at the top, but please try and stay on topic - if we do succeed then we can open other threads later to debate the merits of horses versus motorcycles or armoured cars and light tanks etc...

Thank you.

Wait what?

Theres no armored cars?

Why would they make such a ridiculously stupid decision? There were thousands of them built by various nations.

Why even have a variant system if the most prolific of all the "variant chassis" wouldnt even be modeled?

I just assume they're abstracted under "Recon" units.

Recon is a pure support brigade, their is no combat version of reacon unlike for example artillery so that can't be the only use of armoured cars as recon brigades are a very little part of the army.

And armoured cars as a unit would fall somewhere between mechanized and light tank and we don't need yet a mobile unit. Instead take the light tank, create a variant that focus only on engine and you will pretty much have an armoured car.

Well thats totally not the same as not having ACs at all. I dont mind abstraction. I assume then there are recon upgrades to go from horse, to cycle, to ACs?

Still though. I mean PD has to know people are just going to mod in ACs...to many people love their Greyhounds and Sdkfz's to have that go very long without them.

Actually recon is a very big part of an army and is one of the ways artillery knows where the enemy are.

Recon 1 could be as is, abstracted to horses, motorcycles, bicycles and old prewar armoured cars. Used for infantry divisions.

Recon 2 could be improved from the first but now with an armoured car squadron.

Recon 3 could be improved again but now with heavy armoured cars.

No point in this game thinking tanks will perform the recon role because they won't, they are in the wrong battalions and not structured for recon. Real life is a different matter but this is just a game.

I would like to have different types of recon battalions - bicycle, horse, motorcycle, jeep, armored cars, light tanks -- each with their own different costs, speed, and capabilities. Give us different flavors of recon and I would not even mind if they abstracted armored cars to be part of mechanized equipment.

I believe recon unit in armored division will automatically have armored cars or light tanks as their recon, while infantry have cavalry or bicycle and motorised infantry motorcycle etc.

That is the second time today I read that players should take a workaround to create units not present in the game (the other one was about the absence of garrisons and militia).

That is not looking good when you have to find workarounds for a game that is not even launched. As it is a WW2 military history based game, that would be fun if in game units ressemble the real ones...

These kind of abstractions are completely fine in my book, as long as the game allows for it to be modded ito the game in a good way. As long as the interface can be modded to better allow for overwiev of more production lines than the base game intends for, this seems very likely.

It would be really neat if the game allowed for custom filtering or tabs inside the production line interface, so that you could show for example only equipment, only combat/non-combat vehicles, only one engined planes and so on. That way the inteface would allow for more intricate mods with loads of different production lines.

The game is accounting for those unit types- just approaching it in a different way than previous HoI versions. I'm fine with the garrison/militia change. I'm also ok with removal of armored cars generally, I iust like building lots of things and feeling like an industrialist

Vehicle variants are not a "workaround", they're a central gameplay mechanism.

Totally fine with abstractions and I agree with it being part of Recon instead of full brigade. I would love to have Armored cars attached to my divisions but the division capacity of 4 or 5 is just too small for me to sacrifice, say, an artillery or AT piece as support. My typical infantry division is 3 Infantry + AT or Artillery or Engineers. If i'm allowed 5 brigades, it's 3 infantry + Art and AT or Engineers. As for my mobile divisions, 2 armored, 2 mechanized, 1 tank destroyer or 1 Self Propelled Gun. There just wasn't a need for Armored Cars even though I would like to attach Greyhounds to my American divisions :(

But yes, if people want to mod ACs into HOI4, fine. I'm happy that vanilla HOI4 is going to keep them as support than to take an entire space in a division.

Artillery and Anti tank can be put into combat battalions as well as support brigades so you can have division that have alot of artillery.

HOI4 is trying to be just a normal video game that is based around ww2 but it is never intended to represent the ww2 100% correct like Europa Universalis IV don't represent the early modern times 100% correct. The problem with 100% correctness is that you can just read in a book and understand what will work and what will not work and that will actually destroy the feeling as the generals of ww2 could not know what would work and what wouldn't work and that is probably what the developers have intended to be the case in HOI4.

That mean you will sometimes find things like Super Heavy armor and Super Heavy battleships to be very useful, all units in a good strategy game have their purpose and that purpose is not to be useless or show that they would probably be useless in real life.

Having alot of units that fill more or less the same purpose is not needed and would only bloat the game so the chance that the developers add in armoured cars are pretty much zero other then replacing light tanks with armoured cars. The variant system allow us to create alot of differen't units who can fill the needed roles while also having a cost so you have to priorities what unit designs you need first so it is possible to create armoured cars as a light tank variant, you can even rename it but the picture of the light tank will be used.

It is also possible to mod the game which the developers themselfs are naturally full aware of and that would probably be one response to threads that ask for extra units.

As a huge fan of the schmancy newfangled division designer... I'm all in favour of getting MOAR brigadetypes in general - would give me more toys to play around with when I no doubt waste countless hours of my life tinkering with division setups and options... I want to see infantryvariants(shock-infantry with lots of SMGs, light infantry with bonus mobility, anti-tank rifles, MG-heavy for semi-static defense...), I want to see railway artillery, heavy AA(88s FTW), separate cavalry and horse-artillery brigades... I also want my airforce to get heavy fighters, and my navy to have access to torpedo boats and coastal battleships...
...Armoured Cars? Well, obviously. Assuming they can actually find a sensible role for 'em this time around(I found them VERY lacklustre in the last two games.... though maybe I was just missing something?)
Several recon options sounds like a good approach, though I wonder if maybe that alone is bit limited for something that was in as heavy use as the armoured car?

I was not writing about vehicle variants at all (that's an interesting feature), I was writing about the lack of historical unit types like garrisons and militias.

Being told to make bad infantry is not a good answer for me as garrisons and militias were something different than simply bad infantry. And armoured car existed and were not simply bad tanks.
