Has there been any word about a campaign map series or a map editor being released for this game?

I haven't heard anything about it, but a map editor and randomly generated maps with options to set various parameters would make for a popular DLC. I think a lot of players would enjoy that.

Defo - more game customization options. Then editor OR a campaign driven DLC... though AI improvements would be nice.

Hi,

As far as I can remember I saw somewhere that the game wasn't intended to be mod-friendly. I don't know how much they value user-generated content. That's an interesting question I would like to see answered. Oh and btw I am pretty happy with the map generating algorithm, they did a pretty good job at that imo.

If that is the case that is a bizarre design decision IMO. Active modding communities are a huge benefit to the longevity of a game. I'll have to be wary about purchasing games from this particular developer in the future.

Ok I found the quote, it is in this interview from rock paper shotgun:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/05/04/speak-spell-warlock-master-of-the-arcane-interview/

RPS: Will the game be mod friendly?

Lilja: No, unfortunately the technical solution we have chosen for Warlock is not very mod friendly.
I agree it would have been great but I imagine it does not make sense business wise as they are selling DLC. That is what mods are, but free, they don't want to shoot themselves in the foot, so to speak.

Map editors are not modding tools, they just allow you to design a map and scenario. In addition, map editors extend the life of a game and increase sales over the long term, people are still playing HOMM3 and AoWSM because of players making new maps.

I doubt they will go down that road.

I suppose it could work as a DLC but we are talking about a fairly big and expensive piece of software. I am not sure it falls in the low cost/high value spectrum of where to put their efforts.

The lack of a map editor will just mean the game will have a shorter lifespan and lower return on investment. If that is what the devs want, then more power to them, there are other games to play when I get tired of random maps.

Oh yea cause mod support has really hurt DLC sales for Civ5, Skyrim, FNV, and so on.

See smart devs know that the DLC money is in quality content and new features. While mods are usually quick mini areas to export, cosmetic and graphics changes, behavior changes of existing content to suit player's taste, adding fandom stuff from their favorite movies/shows, and so on.

I do however believe that it was technical issue more than a business one. As I recall it was mentioned somewhere that the game's engine was built off the Majesty 2 engine which have a lot of limitations, to the point it couldn't even to random maps.

Modding would be nice, & map editors are fine...but, the most important requirement for the longevity of a game such as this is a Random Map Generator. This program fits that bill very, very well. Thank you.

A map editor would have to be implemented before I took multiplayer very seriously. Random maps are ok, but too often one person's going to get a significant advantage that is game winning due to luck.

I've been hoping for a map editor pretty much since this game came out. Its probably the only thing that would get me to take it out of mothballs at this point and pick up some of the old DLCs I haven't bothered with.

Originally, there was an idea of making the game mod-friendly, but apparently, it was dissmissed later (bad decision, IMHO). I certainly won't buy a DLC for modding (most games get those for free), nor a "Warlock 2", even if it comes out with a promise of one. Warlock has a lot of potential, but we hadn't a patch in over a month, and there are no news about another DLC... Perhaps the devs already gave up...? :(

About the thread subject, I'm not into map editing, but I like playing maps other people do, and certainly, even if it's REALLY difficult to make, a campaign mode would be awesome (but apparently, that one won't come out either...)
