note-some files hacked to allow for me to change history rather than replay it. Dice used as a way for me to randomly play out monarchs wishes.

The Caliphate was founded in 1468 after the fall of the Muwahhid family. Aden was fairly well progressed compared to its neighbors the hejaz and oman. Caliph Hussein rose to the throne in 1492 and inherited an army of 46000 men and a fleet of five ships.

Economy was weak and relations with oman and hejaz also less than neutral but nothing to worry about. In 1493 relations with cyrenaica were established and a military alliance was made. Negotiations to share explorations failed however. National stability was great and Hussein ordered his admiral Kufra to sail the five ship Aden fleet to Mascate to show power and help the merchants there. Oman expelled the fleet and relations grew sour with the sultan of oman at that point.

1495 nobles and the banks in enthusiasm for Adens naval prowess in the region (so they thought) payed for the building of seven more warships. a massive undertaking that pleased the Caliph Hussein who eyed his 12 ship fleet but unfortunately as he aged on the throne, he allowed the proud fleet of ships to age in port.

The rest of the 90s Hussein with advice from advisors began to expand relations abroad. He founded a royal marriage with Ottoman turks, cyrenaica and morroco. He even took out a loan to give gifts to his new family. Hussein attempted to improve relations with oman but failed. He then went against the advise of advisors and disbanded half of the army to less than 20k men and had the navy dismantled in favor of a two ship transport fleet.

1500-1505 with a strengthened economy Aden payed its loan off and troops were stationed on the island of socotra and in the land of qatar. The motive was to claim more land and expand trade products. The 4000men in qatar are met with resistance but easily destroy the native army.

1505-1514 The economy continued to expand mainly in persia, however in sept 1507 Aden was faced with a decision as its ally cyrenaica went to war against the mamluks and persia. Hussein honors the alliance and sends two ships with 4000 men to invade persia. before the ships even get there, the war is over as cyrenaica surrenders. Aden hastily accepts peace with persia and mamluks. 1514 Hussein passes leaving the throne for Caliph Sanaa.

1515-1542 the new caliph sanaa was interested in peace. He brokered for improved relations with oman and tried to keep his nations monopoly in isfahan intact though he could not control the skyrocketing inflation. Caliph Sanaa built the city of Sanaa in yemen where he had his palace. He spent his days apart from politics and his duties. Aden in this time period was dormant, at peace but not growing or expanding. A final blow to Caliph Sanaa came when the sultan of Oman sent a letter to him in 1540 saying he was a hungry cow, useless to his people. Sanaa did nothing to react but he died in 1542.

1543 a new Caliph comes to power named Jafr. He is full of enthusiasm for expansion and peaceful growth. 1546 a trading post is established in socotra with a 1500man garrison there. 1548 3000men from qatar invade the natives of damman and crush the native army there. Sanaa has a trading post built in damman also. In 1549 Sanaa finances an expedition to the lands of Africa. Led by Jena his sister commanding 4000men to explore the african lands. Jena led her forces to war against natives in africa. She would crush the afars army and move south. Caliph Jafr waisted no time and established a trading post in Afars claiming more land for his Caliphate.

Jena and her expedition led from afars to somalia where she slaughtered the native army there, moving south to ogaden and then in 1551 to mudugh and mogadiscio defeating natives all along the way. 1552 Jena reaches malindi and kenya defeating more natives, her army down to 2000men. She reaches mombasa in late 1552 then begins to head back to afars. Upon arriving in mogadiscio her team is ambushed and she and her men are slaughtered by natives.

Caliph Jafr continued to try and stop inflation with no luck, by 1560 inflation was at 40% he did improve the economy some and keep peace in the country. Jafr passed away in 1584 and was replaced by Caliph Suwaida.

1585-1604 Suwaida continued to expand relations with cyrenaica and turkey however was unable to improve relations with oman. The army was only 9000men and navy only 2 transports. Inflation rose to 60% during his reign and the treasury was depleted dry with investments the Caliph supported. The economy began to crumble. Suwaida passed away in 1604 still leaving the country isolated from europe and others, still leaving the economy on the brink of desaster and the miliary in a shambles. Adens only shining star was its expansion of trade in africa, damman and socotra but it did little to help matters at home. Things would get far worse with the rise of Caliph Minya to the throne in 1605

more later.....

I've enjoyed it as well. It's always a lot more challenging to play a country that is not a powerhouse such as the usual suspects (Turkey, France, Spain, England) and even more daring to play an Arab caliphate with its limited resources...
Keep it up and let's see how it plays out...
Any screenshots/victory point totals...?

Thanks,

Paul

History would show clearly that the mentality of leaders of the Caliphate from 1492 to 1604 were mostly isolationist and weak. Only Jafr made attempts to reach out greatly with his exploration efforts. Diplomacy was horrible however and aside from a few treaties with muslim nations. Aden knew nothing and cared not to know anything of the rest of the world.

Caliph Minya rose to power with a hex upon him from the start. His coronation brought threats from the sultan of Oman because Minya was one of the diplomats who challenged Oman under Caliph Suwaida. He was woefully unpopular with the nobles and ruling class of Aden, his arrogance and foolishness lost him respect from the military. The country slid into slow stability decline and the economy crumbled under his inatention to trade.

From the moment he took power, Minya ordered his loyal officer, colonel Kufra to expand his holdings in Ethiopia. In a war that would last from 1605 to 1607 against the natives of ethiopia in mainly Issas. Kufra lost every battle he fought, losses of men totalled 15,000. It would take the humiliation of Ottoman turk armies to surprisingly come from the north and whipe out the ethiopian forces in Issas. Finally Kufra took the skeletons of his army into Issas and laid claim to the territory. Minya made a foolish mastake of insulting the turkish leaders for interupting his expedition. The turks chose to ignore him as adens nobles pleaded forgiveness on behalf of their ruler. Oman however was not so understanding. Oman hated Aden and its ruler and Minyas taunting after claiming more soil broke the last peaceful nerve. Oman declared war in 1610.

Both nations put everything they had into war. What seemed at first to be a simple skirmish turned out to be a blood bath of no reason. Minya wisely left Kufra in africa. His new armies were built up and met Omans army in Hadramut driving oman back to dofhar. Both sides had small 5000 man regiments battling back and forth. by 1613 Adens armies had skillfully battled its way into and taking control of Dofhar and in 1614 took Masirah. This however would not last as Oman turned the tide atlast after building its army up and waiting. In 1614 it launched an all out two front invasion. First it layed waiste to the Aden army in Masirah overwhelming it in numbers. Second Oman sent a large amphibious assault into Hadramut unexpectedly. The surprised army in hadramut was routed back to Aden. Aden forces stuck in Dofhar were slaughtered. 20,000 men from Oman first took back Masirah, then 1615 Dofhar and then began taking Hadramut. Aden launched attack after attack against Omani forces but could not break them. Both sides took stagering losses but both brought fresh men in. In 1616 with Hadramut in a stalemate. Oman offered a white peace and Minya was prepared to fight more, however he was silenced and the nobles basically forced Minya to accept peace. The war cost the lives of over 50,000 men combined.

Oh how dark the days would become yet for the once proud Aden. Aden had massive debt incurred from the war. Its war losses spurred on public outcries. The economy was whiped out and socotra trading post was lost in the war. Trouble was brewing now for the Caliphate and its ruler Minya. In 1619 ottoman turks defeated natives in Keren, africa. Minya waisted no time in stealing the property for his own gain. Again the turks did not object openly. However the banks foreclosed and the country went bankrupt from war debts. This turned the country on its head.

The next decade was dubbed the terrible twenties. As the Caliphate slipped into a depression, Caliph Minya maintained a 52,000 man army to supress opposition. He also further isolated the country from the world and attempted to take power from the nobles. In spring of 1629 the Caliph Minya was murdered in the palace. His killer a mystery. However Nobles waisted no time in setting up a regency of great strength to rebuild the country.

1629-1632 the nobility led regency made massive efforts to recover the economy. Stability recovered and revolts avoided. the tax income climbed 80% Keren was heavily invested in trading posts to exploit the spice trade there.

The first word from the outside world since Minyas rule came from the mamlukes who had gone bankrupt.

1633 a new Caliph is placed on the throne, Nasser of Aden. He is a decent ruler who wants good relations with others, open doors to others and expand trade. He increases the trading post in Keren to maximum, it creates lots of trade. He invests in an expedition in the indian ocean also. That expedition discovers the island of Mahe and Madagascar. Under Nasser national stability improves to max, tresury is filled modestly and in 1637 a trade post established in Mahe.

Nasser in 1639 establishes a chief judge in Yemen and loyal nobles unite behind the Caliph and raise an army of 7000 men for his disposal. The year was a huge success for the country also as Morocco in nagotiations shared knowledge of europe with aden for the first time ever. At last Aden has the ability to stretch out to other non muslim nations. However that year 1639 a large war broke out. Persia, crimea , georgia versus Iraq, mamluks.

This is the year also that Caliph Nasser desides that foreign affairs are important. He is quick to establish great relations with Turkey and incredibly is able to start a military alliance with them. Oman refuses to join that alliance. Nasser tries to improve relations with Oman and hejaz

Through all of the ups there are a few downers. Suddenly the economy plummets over 50% The sudden economic drop spurs on unhappy peasants that begin to rise up. Nasser miraculously stops the revolts bloodlessly, calming fears and gets a monopoly in isfahan sending the economy booming. Isfahan being one of the biggest markets in the world now.

Hejaz goes bankrupt , as Adens treasury fills with funds from taxes and gifts. News of poland wars come to Nasser, he is slowly learning that europe is a mass of war and religeous plight. He has second thoughts about investing in there relations.

1642 Caliph Nasser desides to open his doors to europeans anyways. First he finally gets Oman to join his alliance with turkey and morocco. At that time, Persia took basrah from Iraq for peace. Adens fleet continues to explore the oceans. Mahe is expanded as a trading post for its spices. Sweden and Hessen share maps with Aden also.

The picture is like this over the past 150 years..... Algeria had annexed tunisia....the mamluks are only a few territories now in north egypt as turkey whiped them out in war....persia has taken most of iraq.... poland is half of what it used to be after russia, austria, hungary, bohemia, ukrain, persia and bavaria chopped it up.... teutonic order has claimed lands in russia and sweden building a small empire of its own....scotland has expanded deeper into britain with the help of spain.... papal states have taken some of naples and venice.... denmark has lost half its empire in wars.

1643 to 1649 Nasser continues to juggle the economy and exploration. he with the help of nobles builds a larger navy and fights off pirates easily. he colonizes reunion islands in the indian ocean. there were a couple economic hicups but nothing serious. Nasser also adjusted his religion tollerance. giving all religions equal acceptance so to keep relations with europe healthy.

In 1649 Caliph Nasser passes away leaving a regent in place. His legacy was one of greatness for Aden however and he will be honored forever. Aden would continue his policy of peaceful expansion and relations best it could.

1650 the nobility regency rules........ in next post gotta take a break. game is getting interesting now :) what an awesome game

1650-1653 a large war in europe begins, the regency of Aden recieves this news with interest. They view the christians as war happy, land greedy fools. They change their religious views when men speak and fight over the same god. Aden sets a policy of distrust and dishonor to the europeans who they see as lesser people. They particularly dislike the french who claim reunion and settled bourbon next to reunion isle.

Oman went bankrupt in 1651 so Aden improved relations with the poor neighbor with a royal marriage. Also Aden begins work on colonizing distant lands for the growth of the Caliphate. Anstirana in madagascar is colonized. An alliance with Algiers and Oman is made in 1653, Aden wants to be considered a regional power to be respected.

The man who rises to power because of his respect is Al Arasee he claims himself to be Emperor of the Aden empire. He colonizes reunion isle, he wants to establish a city there. The imperial fleet begins exploration of the indian ocean more.

Al Arasee claims to his allies a pact against christian powers. Just then Algiers invades Morocco, this angers ADen and they refuse to honor the alliance and stay out of the conflict. Aden expands its policy of muslim unity and accepts royal marriage with tripoli.

1657 Al Arasee passes away and Luqman is elected Emperor by the regency. Storms in the the indian ocean halt and hamper exploration. Luqman refuses to ally with algiers again. He however keeps relations strong.

1658-1662 Luqman is pleased when his fleet discovers lands of indonesia. Most of this land is claimed by netherlands which displeases him. He proclaims that Aden will claim lands in that region as the leaders of muslim faith. He then enters an alliance with Turkey, nubia, tripoli and walachia. Algiers ends its long war against morocco Aden applauds the peace. explorers discover palanbang and jakarta also dutch territory.

royal marriage with morocco and india and sri lanka discovered also owned by christians, france and england. England and scotland and dozens of allies start a war, emperor Luqman sends insults of the state to the infidels for their war actions. 1661 attempts to colonize south african land fails repeatedly. Aden blaims france for the failures and demands tribute. relations with europeans is very poor. 1662 pirates become a problem as they blockade aden, again aden blames the french for these problems. Turkey starts a war with the mamluks , Aden and tripoli join as well. ADen cant do anything because pirates block their ports.

1663-1667 A new emperor is elected from the regency, Saeed takes power and the dice rolls in favor peace with the mamluks. Saeed however focuses on the war against pirates, the pirates even beat a superior turk fleet. So the Aden fleet is built up and challenges the pirates and in 1664 the first huge victory against the pirates is had. Emperor Saeed is praised for his campaign against pirates. Saeed claims socotra again with a trade post and Antsirana also is claimed in madagascar.
hejaz and morocco and algiers war against iraq, a war in which hejaz takes control of iraq. In this time period Saeed further ignores european affairs and focuses on laying claim to singapore and the malay peninsula. The war against pirates continues and victories are gained and succesful colonization of the malay peninsula. failure to claim mekong however. Saeed and his fleet finally wins more victories against pirates but they keep coming. grrrr

1668-1672 regency elects Wajeah as emperor who continues the trend of filling the treasury but allowing inflation to rise. Wajeah was unable to expand colonization. 1671 more victories on pirates however pirates show up in malay territory they hamper trade and travel.

A scandal in the court in 1672 throws the regency in disaray and this leads to the rise of the royal family again. The caliphate is restored as Caliph Tuggart rises to power. He keeps good relations with the nobles and people and stability is high. Tuggart allies his country with turkey, oman, nubia, hejaz, curimea , tripoli and walachia.

1676 Turkey wars against the mamluks Aden joins in and sends 7000men. Only 2500 of them would return but turkey would win the victory.
europe broke out into massive wars, sweden and russia and their allies. poland and russia war with all their allies. In this period around 1680 the economy booms with an income of 40ducats ,inflation dropped and the treasury was more full. Aden changes alliance to algiers and oman as turkey betrays the muslim world by allying with france. Trade in isfahan is great with a monopoly.

1691-1697 Caliph Tuggart squashes a revolt in the colony of ambovombe which his army barely did. 1693 there was a rush of colonists, and increased trade of slaves in african territory increases trade. Tuggart sends colonists to Mekong to claim that rich area. There is a revolt in mekong but by 1696 mekong is a firm territory of Aden. Caliph Tuggart passes away

1698-1715 the rule of Caliph Zuwara
France placed and embargo on Aden in 1698. Zuwara cared not he openly insulted france and said one day Aden will kick france out of bourbon and sri lanka. War was almost declared but Zuwara focused on colonizing mekong. in 1699 a city was established in mekong and its population of 10,700 dwarfed the current population of Aden. 1700 morocco and france go to war. Zuwara is critisized for not declaring war on france. Instead the Caliph tries to colonize khmer and da lat. 1701 persia refuses trade to Aden which kills the monopoly and the economy suffers bad, the 45ducat income drops to 18ducat. 1708 mekong is fortified as Adens far east outpost. 1711 hadramut becomes shiite. The people turn against Zuwara for ignoring Aden so the Caliph must ignore his colonial expansion and focus on the struggling economy , lower stability, influx of more pirates in aden and dry treasury. The pressure mounted on ADen, as its glory days of good economy died and so things turned sour as Zuwara could not beat the pirates. turkey beat the pirates and claimed Aden as weak. Aden called turkey the suckers of the muslim world for playing to the whims of france its ally. that didnt go over too well as relations with turkey dropped. Zuwara died in 1715 leaving the country in decline.

got to take a break, 1716 and on with a new Caliph after this.
