The Plan and Ideas for the Abbasid Caliphate and Mutazelite Islam

Just compiling here some ideas from other threads and some of the material that has been worked on by Calipah and myself.

The Order of the Crescent

In the beta4 build there are a whole bunch of new events created by Calipah, a few by me, and we also edited many of the existing events. These are worth reading, or simply encountering as you play the Abbasid Caliphate. One of the issues we tackled was what happens in Anatolia if the caliphate secures this area. There is an event covering choices for governance. The easy option gives it to Arabs, the tougher one gives it to Turkish emirs, but this is also the only way to get Turkish culture. Finally, there is a third option to establish an Islamic military order akin to the TO and have them rule Anatolia and to either hold back Byzantium or capture Greece (and beyond!).

So, there is a new nation now in the game using the TUR tag and a modified version of the ottomans monarchs. (I edited to increase everyone’s MIL rating and decrease their ADM and/or DIP scores).

There are a few events for them, mostly replications of Caliphate events with reversed options, and some events to reverse ai diploannexation by the Caliphate. So, more events will need to be drafted over the coming months, and a proper leader file considered. Feel free to discuss ideas.

Caliphate Looks West

An entirely new branch of possibilities is being thought out. Based around a cleric in the reign of Salim. If not suppressed but taken on instead as an advisor, he outlives Salim. Then youenter the reign of the greatest of the Caliphate’s monarchs, Ismail V. If Ismail choses to retain the cleric, everything changes for the Caliphate. Most remaining events are slept as a result, while an new batch are effectively woken. This will be either reworked versions from the ‘normal’ storyline, or else entirely new events reflecting the caliphates change in direction.

Essentially, the caliphate returns to its former role of centralising authority under the Caliph and enshrining Islam as a centre of learning and artistic achievement. One result of this will be the shift to the Orthodox tech group. Another will be an eventual détente with Byzantium. These events have not been drafted, they are only in my head at present. I promise I will start writing something more concrete soon.

Mutazelite Islam

This concept is advancing well. Calipah has written a number of events that I will post in the next thread.

Based in Cordoba, the heresy is ‘optional’ for the Cordoba player, but will be the default ai action. Once established there, it will become part of the power struggle within the Islamic world between the two dominant nations of Caliphate and Cordoba.

The Mutazelite Islam tag is already in the game, replacing Shiite. This cosmetic only at this stage. It reads Mutazelite but acts as Shiite for all other purposes. There is a lot to resolve here, and if people can contribute to a list of what will need ‘translation’ that would be great.

We know we have to re-write the Caliphate events that deal with Shiite uprisings. Calipah’s plan is to rework these as ethnic disorder, or perhaps a minor civil war.

We know Oman’s leadership is Shia. This is a valuable thing, because it prevents diploannexation of Oman. We can worsen their relations to prevent this happening, but not forever. If anyone has ideas on how this can be handled to prevent that awful Diploannex stuff, let us know. Maybe they could be Bhuddists? (The leadership, not the provinces, relax Calipah …)

Are there other elements that need to be revised?

Here is the first offering of events relating to the Mutazelite heresy.

Possibly, but in this concept Mutazelite Islam gets its foothold in Cordoba, not the Arabian Peninsula. And there would be a good chunk of time before them in which some ais and almost every player would go for the big DA.

Perhaps it's easier to compose an scenario in which the Omanis hate the Caliphate (or at least some of the earlier monarchs do) and they are allied with the Timurids.

Abberation 3, that sounds a long way off.

Is there a plan to get rid of the Timurids? Or is this all heavy sarcasm?

There's a plan to redo Central Asia, I'm acctually working on that. It consist of having an desperate Ilkhan fighting rebellious vassals. and it consist of fundamental uzbekkhs jihadding on the infidels. Check Mongol Hordes and religons thread!

Anyway, the Timurids should not be in, since they can become the Mughal empire, which can invade India and India is going to be redone!!

Oman?BUDDHIST?!

:p rather, give them a core on Basrah and see relations on both sides going down.

He he, thought you'd like that one.

Your second idea is the way to go.

Currently, lets make all shiite provinces = sunni.Persia has no basis, as most of Iran became Shia on the enforcement of the Savavids, and it was in majority Shia.Same thing with Baluchi.I would say :- The shias never arose to begin with :p

Well, that IS the plan. The question remains, what to do to ensure Oman is not Diploannexed by 1500 along with the others to create the Caliphate Empire.

Hmmm, I think Arabia's fate is always to become part of the Caliphate, I see no point in stopping them, but if you wish so, give the Omanis a colonial empire, Zanzibar again, a part of southern India?Colonial possesions, especially well grown, tend to become pesky. Also, a larger and stronger Oman is usualy harder to diploannex. All in all, I see no point :p

Only option to certainly prevent Caliphate diploannexing Oman is having Oman as Shiite / Mutazelite. I don't see why Oman in particular should not be diploannexed though.

It's only a game balance issue. The problem most commentators have voiced is that the Caliphate is too strong early on. It's growth rate ensures that Byzantium can rarely put up a fight (when both are ai controlled, anyway). Oman as Shiite could not be DA, although once Sulayman (?) goes Shiite they simply join the caliphate, but that is later.

Also, I completely and utterly disagree with the DA process in the game and believe there is little historical precedent to match its plague-like existence in EU2.

Hmmmm Matty, consider going through the ai files of EEP, they have some intresting stuff :) we may even use peaceful ai, and warlike ai to tone down the Caliphate and many many other states. And anyway, the Caliphate is supposed to conquer much :p

Conquer, sure. That's fine. Get five free wealthy provinces? That's a bit different to conquering. Now, I realise that you find an affront anything that stands in the way of the Caliphate conquering the entire world and converting it to Sunni Islam, but I feel we need to make a game with more than just you in mind.

I'll look at those event sometime. Thanks!

:p oh come on, are you sure you dont want to look at my events for the Caliphate's conquest of China?

Calipah said:
:p oh come on, are you sure you dont want to look at my events for the Caliphate's conquest of China?

Is that the one where as soon as the caliphate has a province adjacent to China, they secede their entire country and convert instantly?

Here are the core events relating to the Caliphate going 'west'. This path generally means the following:

1. They will gain Orthodox tech

2. They are less conquest driven, more centralised and liberal

3. They have fewer internal revolt issues

4. They will not by event head relentlessly eastwards into India, despite superior forces on their north-west border ready to pound on them when they are weak.

5. A detente between the Caliphate and Byzantium which sees each concede cores and some terrain. (There are many variables, it will be based on their situation when the event triggers).

Note that I have a some [bracketed text]. This text especially relies upon Calipah to provide the right names and locales and titles, as he feels is appropriate.

Over a period of his reign he invested heavily in the building of libraries in [3 major cities] to rival that in Bagdad. To these he attached colleges for the study of mathematics, physics, geometry and medicine. The colleges included schools for study of the Qu'ran, but the Caliph's [proclamation] forbad the teachers of science to also be imams, to ensure that the learning ofscience would not be cloudy by arguments over theology."

Im loving the events though the Imams name should be Hussien perhaps and the cheif advisor is named in the Arab world Wali ad-Dawla.

Perhaps there should be a connection with the Mutazalites?
