Caithness and Orkney trouble

Playing Norway for the second time I am pretty sure there is someting wrong. This is the situation:
Count Erling of Caithness is King Olav's direct vassal. When going to diplomacy to revoke his title the button is greyed out and the tool tip says that he must be my direct vassal for me to do that, which he is.
Must be wrong?

Are you sure he is your direct vassal? Since in my game he is a vassal of the duke of Orkney.

Thanks for answering. I started all over and was just sucked into the gameplay and now I am not really sure what was what. I hav not encountered the problem this time around so ley us just forget it. I will test more thoroughly next time
