Hi there!
So I'm a despot of Croatia Serbia and a few more but I'm still under the rule of the BE..
But when I hover over my portrait among all the titles there I see Caesar of BE.

So I went to my liege and I see that instead of Caesar he is something else (Starts with B?) To lazy to look it up it's 4 AM right now :(
My liege also only has duke titles (apart from the BE title)

Sooo.. What happened?
P.S I'm way more powerful then him just to lazy to deal with all the empire stuff..

Also What's the deal with the Despot title? Why not king? Because were Orthodox? Or because I'm not independent? or is it because I'm elective?

Caesar was basically emperor but more of an honorary one. It was a high rank, initially could have some lands assigned as his 'imperial' domain and so on, but always under the Augustus, i.e. the Basileus.

Over time, the junior emperor became closer and closer to a court dignity but even around the time of the crusaders some of the old ceremonies and protocol associated with being a junior emperor survived. The need to come up with higher dignities resulted from devaluation of the title, which resulted from somewhat excessive awarding.

Later, Caesar was surpassed by Sebastos (a sorta-monarchic court dignity, reserved for the highest-ups) and even by the despots actually, who were not really kings or even monarchs. They shared in the imperial dignity of the Basileus and were powerful but were not the same type of separate monarch a Western king was. I don't know if the Byzantines themselves regarded Western kings as equals of despots. It's possible and even possible that despots from the imperial family were regarded as outranking a simple western King (and vice versa from the perspective of that king, who saw himself as an independent crowned monarch), but I don't know. But despotes, strictly speaking, was a court dignity, non-hereditary and non-territorial, so, in essence: a court title. Despot eventually became what Caesar used to be: a dignity given to imperial sons etc.

Caesar and Augustus were both titles of the Emperor, but Augustus was the main one. During the tetrarchy (293-313) there were four Emperors who were all allies but the Empire was divided into east and west, each half had a Caesar and an Augustus with the Augustus being the senior Emperor. The Byzantines started using Basileus instead of Augustus but kept Caesar around as a lower title.

Being Caesar basically means that the Emperor is so scared of you that he's given you semi-imperial status to keep you happy.

The Holy Roman Emperor was properly 'Imperator Augustus Romanorum' in latin but called Kaiser in German so is usually called by the lower title despite having the higher one.

I don't know if the Byzantines themselves regarded Western kings as equals of despots.

They regarded Western Kings as barbarian chieftains who could at best be supplicants or mercenaries.

That's because there is no equivalent to "Augustus" in German. "Kaiser" just basically means the same as "Emperor" in English and also the co-Emperors of the tetrarchy are mostly called "mitkaiser".

Uhm. Kaiser = Caesar. Emperor = Imperator (also used in German). Both words derive from the Roman. And as far as I know, the 8th month of the year is called "August" in German, and there's also the name August. Both derived from Augustus. So. They just went with a different word for the same concept. Not through any lack of [EDIT] words.

Imperator is not a word commonly used in German and yes, there are the name and the month called "August", but there is no such title in German.

I know (we've got the exact same use for both words btw :) ), it's just that it shows the word, and the meaning, is present in the language. Imported of course, and losing some of its precision, but present.

Specifically, the German Kaiser kept using "Imperator" as an official title until the Corsican came and ruined everything. The Austrians used it until 1918.
