So, here's a strange thing I've noticed while checking the mess in the Kingdom of France: The Queen is part of the House de Bourgogne. So was her father and grandfather, both kings of France too. I wondered how de Bourgogne seized the power, so I checked the first de Bourgogne King. Surprise:

Robert de Bourgogne is son of a Capet! I started in 1080 so in fact, this is the historical character, Duke of Burgundy of the Capet dynasty. It is interesting to see that he's got his own dynasty instead of being a Capet like his brothers and sisters.

So, can we understand that Cadet Branches will be available for players as well as it is already implemented for starting characters? I'm already loving it!

Always been like that...

character are set with different dynasties in the history file. If you start before they are born they will get the dynasty from their legitimate parents.

The game doesn't have cadet branches. It would have to define cadet branches for each individual dynasty. And what determines who gets what cadet dynasty name? or how many cadet branches? or when do they split? these answers are easy to answer when reading history but not so easy to answer when it is contemporary and happening. Who is going to win the election of 2016? People in 2020 will know, but we can only guess.

Yes, that's what I figured too -that it has always been like that- when I realised it was the historical character here. Yet I think it gives a good indication on how to get the dynasty name: it's the name of his duchy. So we could say, for instance, to create a cadet dynasty, we must have at least a duchy title, and a certain amount of prestige. A bit like creating a duchy title.

Having different ones for Empires and Kingdoms would also be good. Plantagenet(or however it's spelled) for England for example.
Also, why do we call them cadet branches? What is the meaning of the word?

I believe it's again one of these english word coming from French. the oldest child of a family is called "aîné", and the younger children are called "cadet". Hence the Cadet Branch.

The "cadet" in "cadet branch" derives from the Gascon word "capbet", which means "captain" in the military sense. The association with younger sons of nobles comes from the Gascon tradition of making these sons serve as military officers at court. A cadet branch is one started by one of those captains. (The word "capbet" itself ultimately comes from "capitellum", Latin for "little head"--as in, less important than the regular head of the family.)
