And lower supplies/dissent to show that they worked on it (food for those workers) and that this lowered unemployment. Maybe a rise in dissent if you don't build it???

increasing infra and lowering dissent would be obvious effects of such an event. Anyway Germany already has lots of dissent lowering events. We definately need events balancing that point out.

Also events regarding the KDF (Kraft durch Freude = Strength through Joy) organization spring to mind. They organized the first masstourism in Germany, built holiday camps near the sea, and propagated the VW beetle as "KdF-Wagen". Till the war broke out 39 million (!) germans had taken a trip with KdF.

Of course these measures were taken to hide the general loss of privileges, e.g. the dissolvement of all Labour Unions. Employers and Employees were now organized in the DAF (Deutsche Arbeitsfront = German Labour Front) and stripped of all former rights. Only the fewest people were allowed to change jobs....

Dissent rising factors might be: Communist Propaganda, a propaganda lie about the bad treatment of Volksdeutsche Minorities in other countries (dissent up, manpower also), rumours about bad treatment of german minorities in special facilities (although that might be in the verboten part of event possibilities), foreign propaganda, Gestapo strikes against Swing communities et c., et c.

How about the change of Chief of Staffs??? I think that might give some dissent... Also dissent lowerings should have some bad effects as well (for example Olympics should have massive supply loss).
EDIT: and how about the prohibition of Socialist/Communist parties???

Read them now, I might know some other dissent rising things: something with the WeiBe Rose resistance movement maybe? Or scientists leaving the nation, or maybe the Total War Speech??? There are so many options for adding flavour events...

Marlene Dietrich could be included, her 'defection' to the US might be a worth a small dissent raise.
short bio
dates

also
Leni Riefenstahl might be worth a closer look. Some of her films made her an outcast after the war as she was looked at as a collaborator with the Nazi-Regime. Nowadays she´s somewhat rehabilitated.
Website on Leni Riefenstahl

thinking about cultural events of the 3rd reich also the famous art exhibition 'Entartete Kunst' (Degenerate Art) springs to mind.
Entartete Kunst

okay then, you made me to...;)

1)
name: "Marlene Dietrich leaves Germany!"

desc: "The famous German actor and singer Marlene Dietrich ('Der Blaue Engel') has lived in America since the early 30´s working for Paramount Pictures.
In 1936 the German government tried to win her back to star in propaganda movies offering the incredible sum of 200.000 Reichsmark per movie. She declined. Dietrich became an American citizen in 1939. Historically she later entertained American Forces at the front and was awarded the Medal of Freedom for 'meeting a grueling schedule of performances under battle conditions... despite risk to her life'."

trigger: that would be sometime in the year 1939. state religion must be fascist though.
effects: dissent rise of 3-5% maybe, enuff possibilities to lower it in other events

[edit] no options, this one just happens, if germany happens to be fascist that is...

2)

name: "Entartete Kunst"

desc: "Ever since the ruling party came to power in 1933 the artists in Germany had hard times. The works of famous artists like Kandinsky, Chagall, Kollwitz, Dix, Grosz or Feininger now were considered 'degenerate' or 'bolshevik'. Historically in 1937, Party officials purged German museums of works they considered to be degenerate."

trigger: April 1937, Germany is Fascist

option a: "Purge the museums!"
effect: alignment moves towards fascism, gain 1000 supplies (a lot of the paintings were sold to foreigners later!), triggers event no. 3.

option b: "Leave them"
effect: alignment moves towards democracy, dissent rises by 5% (artists generally tend to be critical with the regime i think)

3)
name: "Exhibition of degenerate art"

desc: "From the thousands of works purged from the museums in spring, historically 650 were chosen for a special exhibit of Entartete Kunst. The exhibit traveled to eleven cities in Germany and Austria. In each installation, the works were poorly hung and surrounded by graffiti and hand written labels mocking the artists and their creations. Over three million visitors attended making it the first "blockbuster" exhibition."

option a: "to exhibit"
effect: alignment moves a little to fascism (propaganda), a few hundred supplies again (entry fees)

option b: "or not to exhibit"
effect: - 100 supplies, (where to store all the crap?)

4)

name: "Leni Riefenstahl"

desc: "The director Leni Riefenstahl was famous for her documentary on the 1934 Fascist Party convention in Nuremberg 'Triumph of the Will' that was chosen best film in the 30's at both the Venice Film Festival and the Paris World Fair.
Now Leni Riefenstahl finished her latest project, a two part film named 'Olympia' on the Olympic Games in Berlin 1936. 'Olympia I - The Festival of the People' and 'Olympia II - The Festival of Beauty'. Many cameras and much equipment were needed to make the films. The shooting techniques and the equipment developed rapidly. The films served propaganda as they were focusing on the athletes as rolemodels for the fascist physical culture."

trigger: summer 1938, obviously Olympic Games have happened

option a: "Splendid!"
effects: - 250 supplies, +5 DI, +1 IC in Berlin

5)

name: "Autobahn opened for public"

desc: "In 1939 another part of our Reichsautobahn has been finished. Königsberg and Elbing are added to the destinations that can be reached safely on the network of now 3.000 km high-speed roads! All in all 130.000 men are working on the Autobahn system."

option a: "OK"

effects: Elbing and Königsberg raise their infra by 10, dissent goes down by 2 (propaganda and low unemployment) , DI +2 (Germany is still famous for these highways), Infantry tech "Bulldozer" gained

6)

name: "Transport for the Masses!"

desc: "In 1938 the recreational organisation 'Kraft durch Freude' (Strength through Joy) started their new program to mass-motorize the german people. They issued coupon cards that could be bought cheaply on a monthly basis. A brandnew Volkswagen became affordable to the average worker that way, when he had bought the total of 990 Reichsmark. Historically the cheaply mass-produced cars were never delivered to the customers. The money was used for building Kübelwagen to motorize the Wehrmacht instead."

trigger: 1938, Germany is not at war
option a: "Issue the coupons"
effects: techs 'mass production' and 'vehicle assembly construction' gained, +3 IC in Hannover (Volkswagen works!), - 5000 steel (used in production), - 5000 coal (used in production), -1000 oil (going private sector), trigger event 7

option b: "they´ll have to buy their cars like everybody else!"
effects: dissent + 10

7)

name: "Volkswagen delivery"

desc: "In 1938 we promised the people to get cheap cars if they bought these coupons. Shall we deliver the cars?"

option a: "of course"
effects: alignment slightly moves to democracy (own a car, feel free), dissent drops by 3(?)

option b: "No. We can't afford that"
effects: +10 dissent

i think the effects should be discussed, i´m unsure with these

8)

name: "Anti-German Demonstrations in Czechoslovakia"

desc: "The propaganda ministry today announced, that the german minority in Czechoslovakia is subject to severe oppression in this country."

option a: "someday..."

effects: dissent +3, triggers the sudeten event

time: this event should trigger before the sudetencrisis happens, germany isn´t at war

Many of these may have been taken into consideration for the game default values. Rather than make Germany stronger, should we reduce some initial values and allow these events to bring the values back up to current?

actually I didn´t dare to suggest that! :D
Go C.O.R.E.!

then I just read in a fat ww2 tome i have around that Ribbentrop and the polish foreign minister met in warsaw on Jan. 25., 1939. There they negotiated the danzig question, the corridor once more and an anticommunist alliance. Beck later said that Ribbentrop had tried to press him into the anti-komintern pact promising slovakia for that. moreover he quoted Ribbentrop something like this: "You are very stubborn regarding the naval question...the black sea is also a sea".

would that make up for an anticommunist polish-german alliance? adding slovakia and parts of romania to polish claims, handing over danzig?
still something feels oddly wrong about it...

Well, it's not the secret that Germany were interested in adding Poland to the Axis - but there was very, very slim chance for that. Many reasons, but most important:
1) Germany were one of countries which divided Poland at the end of XVIII century. Thanks to that (and agressive Bismarck "Kulturkampf") polish society was strongly anti-german (as anti-soviet, or rather anti-russian as well).
2) In late 30-ties Poland was allied with France (later with England) and believed that Allies are more powerful than Germany (I WW experience).
3) ANY territory lost thanks to political agreement in Poland means suicide of goverment. It's mostly experience of dividing Poland at the end of XVIII century - something like that would result in revolution. So even alternative outcome of of "Danzig or WAR" in HoI is probably too optimistic - dissent hit of 20-30% and sort of coup (like in Yugoslavia) would be more probable.

thanks for clearing me up there.
colud you still make up an event for poland allying with germany?, including a 30 % dissent hit and all?
IMO it would be cool for the player to have the choice. ally´s proposal also comes event based...

Ok, maybe we could put it in chain of events:
1) First event (POL) - Poland secedes Gdansk (modified basic HoI event), but possible only, if NOT allied with England (not like now). If allied, then Poland always choose WAR (no option to secede Gdansk).
If not allied and second option chosen, Poland gets 30% dissent hit and moves a bit closer to fascism.
2) Random events (2,3 and 4 - POL) - after losing Gdansk, every 30 days there is 20% chance for revolt (democratic, communist and fascist). It would picture high unrest after losing Danzig.
3) (5th event - GER) 3 months later Germany suggest alliance - possible only if polish government type is paternal autocrat or fascist.
4) (6th event - POL) Polish answer Option a (more probable) is WAR! - dissent is lowered by 10%, option b is "Yes" - dissent hit 20%, alliance with Germany.

It would make alliance very, very unlikely - teoretically, 95/100 that Poland would be allied with UK, and if not then 95/100 that they would fight for Danzig, and if not then high chance that they would revolt, and if not (or if they would go fascist) then 95/100 that they won't accept alliance... :D
It's rather option for unortodox Polish player - slim chance that AI choose this.
