Phil,

Could you find the post you mention which has the counter strip we worked on? If you just find the thread with the counter strip and then cut and paste the link into your next post on this thread, all of us can find it. I know I've been looking for it for a while and haven't seen it. : )

Also, the people we should credit with the dots is first Avon_Ulysses who made a strip on the counters
http://www.europa-universalis.com/forum/showthread.php?t=60078&page=2&pp=25
and second JSobieski3 who modified Avon_Ulysses' idea into dots.

: )

Secondly, unless everyone is wedded to the idea of keeping the old military symbology (i.e., rectangle with an 'x' in it equals infantry), it wouldn't be too much trouble (and by that I mean I might be able to do it, if you don't want to) to come up something more realistic - say, the silhouette of a little guy with a rifle for infantry, the silhouette of a tank for armor, the silhouette of a halftrack for mechanized infantry, and so on. If you were absurdly ambitious you could even make the tank silhouettes slightly different for the majors (USA looks like a Sherman, Germany looks like a Panther, etc.).

No, it wouldn't be practical to have different silhouettes for majors, because all counters share the same design. The flags already require bending the system a little. Besides, I like the symbols. And they're not that old, STANAG 2019 is somewhat recent (as is NATO, for that matter). :p I'm thinking of changing everything to symbols, actually. I'll just have to find the symbols for air and naval units. All the air units should have the "infinity" symbol for fixed wing aircraft, but I'd need to know what the modifiers are for each type. Also, using the air symbol as the modifier to apply to the carrier counter symbol when it has loaded air wings would work.

And now for something completely different:

McNaughton, this site might prove useful in your quest for roundels.

Ohhhhh... well, that would be mighty sharp!

Inigo Montoya - I am sorry, but the new strip is one that is coming in v7. PM me and I'll give you a sneak preview and you can have your copy first.

That is, unless these horses get this awesome counter mod created first.

McNaughton - as you get each nation done (Germany, UK, whatever), please forward a copy of one of the counters to me so I can look it over and start thinking about mapcolors. I, of course, only offer this to you as you might want to concentrate your time on the counters. Kind of like how the Nazis used to offer a luger with one bullet in it to certain disloyal or out-of-favor Nazis in jail. :p ;)

McNaughton, awesome sprite-counters!!

I suggest you to collaborate together in order to have the colors and the symbols of the McNaughton's sprite-counters coincide with the Phil's counter-counter he already did! It would be the Ultimate country-counter MOD for CORE!!! It will best choice foe every kind of tastes (grognard's counter or "lighter" counter)!

Oh, and if help is required to create the palettes for some countries, count me in. Just provide the template so I place the colours in the correct indexes, and a list of countries to make.

Thanks, PKZIP. I'll do whatever these guys want; McNaugton's German and British colors already beat the poo out of my stuff. :D But I do think I can fineagle and contrive an interesting set of mapcolors to match whatever he suggests. The one thing about the CORE setup that I really want is for it to be totally unique with the way counters and mapcolors compliment each other.

I think we can have an Advanced CORE counter set (McNaughton/Gwalcmai) and Basic CORE counter set (my set; the original HoI set is, shall we say, Pre-War  ) that we release as an add-on to the CORE.exe package. That is, if we are going to do the counters as a stand-alone package as was discussed previously.

Just another suggestion, if this isn't a waste of time for you...
I have seen the "Graphics" thread on TGW mod, IMHO Land unit counter are better with the national flag on the center and the type symbol on the bottom-left corner (Air and naval units are fine as they are now!).

Same here - in the center. However, maybe there can be a supplemental counter strip released like you mention. Always nice to have options, but I like continuity for myself.

Finland Air Recognition Roundel

I have a question, does the Finnish Air Recognition roundel meet the same exclusion values as the German Swastika? I just don't want to create the roundel and have the Counter-mod create problems.

The Finnish swastika is not banned anywhere. There are statues in Finland with it on it. Besides, it's a conventional swastika (the Nazis had a reverse one). It's not as if the Finns did anything awful during the war.

I'm not sure about that. In IL2FB, Finnish planes have a white and blue roundel instead of the historical swastika... I suppose that Maddox games made this for some reason. :)

This is one of those things that supports why I think you should have a primary counter strip and auxilary ones. I can think of a few different things that might be for auxilary strips. Perhaps we can have a primary one and then put a few others in the folder with names such as FinnSwastika_hoi_counter_strip.bmp (a little wordy, but you get the idea).

I don't mind about swastikas, in fact i prefer them because it's more historical. In fact, in the Spanish edition of hoi, GER uses the real flag with the swastika.

BUT i think that they should be optional in CORE installation or come as a separate download, because i understand people, like Ilkhold, that don't want them.

I am against any form of Swastika in the game. In my country there are laws against such things and they exist for a good reason.

I believe you are implying you are a citizen of Germany. First of, the Finnish Swastika has little to nothing to do with the German one. Secondly, you must understand that the counter clockwise swastika is originally a Hindu/Buddhist symbol, it's a symbol of good luck and peace and can be found in Buddhist monasteries all around Asia. The Nazis are the one that warped it into a symbol of hatred and intolerance. I should know! I'm Buddhist! :D

That's an understatement. Genocide, mass murder and crimes against humanity are what are inseperable connected with the Nazis and the war they waged.
To make it sure, in germany, the Swastika isn't deleted from historical records. But this game isn't historical, because it purposedly leaves out all references to Nazi crimes. That is one reason why the Swastika is not to be included in such work, to ensure that people do not mix up fiction with reality.
