Sweden: The sick man of Europe Part II
Gustav Vasa, the new King
After having peacefully broken away from the Dannish, the Swedish Parliament was searching for a new noble to take the throne. Every noble seemed unfit, until, they found Gustav. Not only was he an able general, but he was also one of the best administrative genious of his time. His diplomatic skills were amongst the best as well, and so, after much consideration, the Parliament decided to elect Gustav Vasa as the new king. Everyone rejoiced in the realm. Never did Sweden seen such an able King. Not even the old king Knut matched Gustav's skills.
Luther, the reformation of the church and The Parliament of Västerås
Having pinned his 95 articles on the churchdoor of wittenberg, condemning the trafic of reedems by the pope, who had become absolutely corrupt, a new branch of christianity apeared: Protestantism. Having taken over the Swedish government, Gustav had many debts to pay. So much so, that he forced the church to "lend" their property to the state. This made Sweden to convert to the protestant faith, raising the income greatly. Nothing less then 30%. However, incited by Swedish Enemies, many people rose to rebelion in every part of the realm. These were quickly put down but many lives perished in such a short period of time. May God have mercy on the poor Swedes that died during it.
The First Great Northern War
Being able to reform his country, everything was going smoothly in Sweden. All thanks to the great King Gustav was. However, we started noticing that both Russia and Poland were acting agressively toward us, and even saw far many troops on our borders. We sent diplomats to most crowned heads of Europe, even to the heathen turks. The support they gave us will not be told of, as it is part of a secret evil agreement between the high contracting parties. We started mustering extra troops, notably only cavalry. We did not use arquebuses or whatever Europeans call these weapons, as they were made by the demon itself. When war started, only Denmark came to Swedish aid. The Poles struck the baltic hard, but failed to capture Estonia. The Russian hordes tossed everything in Ingria, children, dogs, women, and finally men. But to no avail. They were always beaten back no matter what they did. War draged on, and with both parties not wanting to sign peace, we were forced to take the offensive. Under the leadership of one of our best generals, we took pomerelia fast. After many failures, the poles were forced to peace, giving us Danzig. Never did Gustav Vasa, or even the Poles, think that the war would end like this.
The Russian Campaign
Peace lasted for a decade. The Polish monarch suffered from a sickness that didnt allow him to deal with foreign matters properly, and so we used this to our advantage. Having reformed the military, thanks for French and Turkish advisors, and making full use of this new, demonic invention arquebuses were, the Russian hordes were no match for Sweden. While Russia was involved in their petty squabbles with minor nations, we sent a formal declaration of war to them, and made a sneaky attack before winter came. We took many provinces, but when the harsh winter was about to take place, we retreated. We waited until the ice melt, and then launched another offensive. Despite Russian efforts, they were forced to give us Ingria and Kexholm, forever forbiding Russian merchants to trade in the baltic. Sweden was now on the ascendent, almost shining so bright as her Nordic compatriot: Denmark. All that Swedish people can do now, is thanks God for such magnificient days.
