Historical is the default option for lucky nations in In Nomine. And IIRC, the Byzantine Empire was bought its extra time to live by the OE's problems with the Timurids, so it is realistic that the OE-Timurid fued would work to Byzantium's benefit.

Sure, The ottos are supposed to have their hand full. I just wish it wasn't Byzans getting all the benefits.
I just can't see all those provinces going back to that old empire. I would rather have that they created some minor states in stead.

I my first game. Otto lost all of greece to Byzans because of the rebels. A little while later byzans moved its capitol to the province above athens. a couple of years later otto conquered Thrace, but Byzans keept on living in greece.

You might be able to mod that by removing the line "union=BYZ" from your cultures.txt file in the game. Not sure, but it seems logical.

1399 is pretty easy. The Ottomans are being trounced by the Timurids so its easy to take advantage of the situation

Ottomans have been doing pretty well in my game - 1400 start with historically lucky. Around 1420 they swept up most of the southern Balkans, including a resurgent Serbian Empire :p , and now they're gaining provinces that are defecting from the Anatolian Mamluks. So far the Timurids seem more interested in Pakistan and Persian area. I haven't seen a whole lot of rebel activity in their provinces, either. I think so long as a nation maintains high prestige and high stability, rebels aren't much of a problem, but if both fall then they can enter a death spiral.

The Ottomans have done well in my game, too. I started in 1399. Well, actually they're having a little bit of trouble because Austria and I (Burgundy) beat them back to Anatolia a couple times, but I haven't seen Byzantium since the Turks annexed them decades ago. :p

it's weird lol if I open my history book right now it has the whole history of Byzantium!

Historically they could not have survived even with the Timurid Empires war with the OE lol they didn't have a massive enough army and they had basically collapsed! They were outnumbered by the Turks and could not be beaten so easily.

Wow, you guys are right. I started as Byzantium in 1402, and after a few months declared war upon them. With 0% warscore I managed to take three Greek provinces from them. :p

Its because they have cores all over the place. Heirs of the Roman Empire and all that.

Could be fixed by having an event remove all their cores if they get destroyed. ie, fall of Constantinople. It would be justified because once the City falls, the claim to the Eastern roman empire really vanishes. I cant imagine 1460 rebels in Cyprus taking arms in the name of Byzantium.

heh, maybe not on Cyprus, but iirc there were a number of rebellions on the greek mainland that tried to recreate the Byzantine Empire.
Technically the last one of those was the one in the 1820s, but we all know how that went :p

You know.... for all we know, in an alternative history, Byzantium could have become a nasty, expansionist, tyrranical empire whom we look back on with disgust for literally enslaving half of Europe. >.>

So who knows. It could be a good day ;p

You're obviously not coming from the Balkans...OE tried for centuries to establish Islam in Eastern Europe using force and speaking realistically, they were "barbarians" in the first century.I'm pretty sure the populations in those areas would be much happier, with a polyethnic Byzantium.

I must be unlucky. My first game was with the Byzantines and it consisted of OE getting out of the Timurid war with a white peace and then turning on me. My Balkan allies were useless and I got thrashed.

I think I need to relearn the game with the new expansion as a major.
