After installing IN my first choice was Byzanz.

I started first 1403.
At this date the Ottoman lost a few provinces in Asia and is loated by two great rebel armies, in Europa the lost Salona to Byzanz.
After blocking the Hellespont with my Navy (the turks has only one ship), I invaded Anatolia, cause the rebell armies annilated the turkish army alone.
Two years later Anatolia was in greek hand and the rebells own the european part of the Ottoman Empire, but the ottoman goverment didn't collapse.
So I send my fleet to the harbour and let the rebel armies march to asia minor. Meanwhile nationalist rebels appear in bulgaria and albania.
After capturing the coastal provinces in Europa from the rebels, the ottomans seceed Janina, Edirne, Macedonia, Antalya and Bursa to my glorious empire.

Immidiatly I gain turkish as accepted culture, and I have 0 BB
Two years later, after losing all provinces to the rebells the ottoman goverment collapse and Bulgaria (with 5 provinces) and Albania are indepent.
So in 1411 the Ottoman Empire shrink to only 3 provinces, and few month later my Empire annexed Albania and Vasallized Bulgaria after the seceed there costal provinces.
At this time I had 13 provinces and take the role of the Ottomans, surounded only by small countries, and with over 20 core provinces left, only the sky are my limit.

I love this game!

i have to agree, im only 10 years into my game as the byzantines (1409) but the OE has been ripped apart by revolts and invasions so much so they are almost out of the game.

shouldnt the OE be a major player in this time period?

1399 was a bad time for the Ottomans. It pretty much sucked to be them all the way to 1420. Starting the game in this timeframe means nothing is won yet for them.

But yeah, Im a bit surprised to see the Byz AI doing so well.

In my game Byz were in Hillary Clinton mode. Ottomans, Bohemia and Austria kept killing them in different places but they were always recreating and rebuilding somewhere, be it Athens, Crimea, Rhodos, Cyprus, different Greek and Balkan provinces. Now they are sitting on Corfu...

No idea how they do it but they are very tough ******** to kill.

Its because they have cores all over the place. Heirs of the Roman Empire and all that.

Could be fixed by having an event remove all their cores if they get destroyed. ie, fall of Constantinople. It would be justified because once the City falls, the claim to the Eastern roman empire really vanishes. I cant imagine 1460 rebels in Cyprus taking arms in the name of Byzantium.

Ottomans are doing well in my 1399 start. Byzantium are out of the picture by now (1460) as you would expect.

Looking forward to some screenie-rich Byzantium AARs at some point :)

Interesting. In a number of my games, the Byzantines got completely flattened; along with Serbia, Wallachia, Ragusa, Venice's southern Balkan provinces, Achea, the Knights, Transylvania, Bosnia and Montenegro.

This might be because I had Lucky nations as historical... the Ottomans did reasonably well for quite a while, after all. I guess I'll try with lucky on random or off at some point and see what happens.

so it seems to be the general consensus that a 1399 start usually sees the OE fall.

im not much of an expert in history but the OE conquered constanpole in 1420 right? so how did they go from bein in a dire situation in 1399 to a flourishing empire in 1420?

In 1453. I'm giving Byz a ride today. Is 1399 an ambitious start?

In the few games I've played I noticed that Ottomans only survive when I do a Historically Lucky game. If I turn off Lucky nations entirely, and start in 1399, they get destroyed and the Byzantine Empire usually becomes a significant force in that region.

As a side note, playing as Ottomans starting in 1399 is complete Hell. I get steamrolled quick.

Yeah that happened to me too. The Timurids and their friends are more than a handful, and what happens then is that half the Balkans DOW you.
You can understand why the AI struggles too if it doesn't start with 'lucky' advantage.

What's the default option? I started a game as Muscovy-Russia and the OE is doing pretty well for itself in both Asia Minor and the Balkans a few decades in (The Timurids have collapsed now).

In 1399, the Ottomans were invaded by Timurids, in 1402 they lost their ruler and got a civil war. So yeah, IRL they were in dire situation too.

I'm pretty sure the default option is Historical for lucky nations. I've had to change it to Random manually. Then again, maybe it isn't.
