But I doubt it is the province's name, have you seen it been called Byzantium in there other games.

Look at the name listed under the Byzantine shield at the top left corner of the screenshot - right above all of the province information. It says Byzantion. Now, the only province that would conceivably be named 'Byzantion' in the game is the one that should be named 'Constantinople', or some version thereof. Plus, if I'm not mistaken, that's the name that does show up on that province in today's screenshot.

edit: just checked, and yup, I'm right. On the province that should be 'Constantinople', right behind the Byzantine shield, is a word that starts with 'By' and ends with 'n'. Can you think of anything else other than 'Byzantion' that it would be? ;)

Imagine if they called France Gaul? I mean, thats what France was build on top of, and thats what some people refer to it as to the present. I just don't understand how a clearly incorrect name for a state could be chosen for not good reason.

It is a province, not a city. That's why there is Ile de France, not Paris either. Capiche?

But this explanation makes no sense at all, since all of the other provinces shown in the most recent screenshot (Philippopolis, Adrianople, Prusa, Nicomedia, Nicea, Callipolis) are named after the primary city within.

Clearly incorrect name

As has been mentioned in this thread already, there are several examples of contemporary usage of the chosen name, both from people living there and not. It's a matter of choice between different alternatives, a choice that has been made pretty clear by the Project Manager/Developing Head Honcho at Paradox. Deal with it.

When no recognisable area name could be found, a city name was applied.

I'm not arguing about the name of the nation, though. I'm arguing about the name of the city. Considering that all of the other provinces we've seen in the area are named after the name of the city as called by the people at that time (or some version thereof) - the *only* one misnamed by these criteria is 'Byzantion'. If, as some here have been arguing, the reason the name 'Byzantion' was chosen was that some of the educated scholars of the time had begun referring to Constantinople as 'Byzantion', well, at that time the very same scholars were also referring to Adrianople as 'Orestias' - that city's ancient name. Why not use the same convention for that city as well?

Ok, from the screenshot I was under the impression that the provinces were in general named after the cities within, as in Victoria. One more question, and my doubts can be laid to rest... ;) Is the city itself named Constantinople, or Byzantion?

I'd guess Constantinople, as that is the name in EU2 and had been so since the Roman Empire's late days IIRC.:)

No historic events. After the scenario starts you're on your own...
