I'm playing Byzantium in IGC (on Hard/Nomal), am up to 1600 and successfully expanded the Empire to 14 provinces.

However, I am a little concerned about the tactics of my Turkish enemies. They have DoWd Marmalukes four times and our allies the Venetians twice, but have never DoWd Byzantium. I don't understand why not. They are the worst of enemies (-200), and while we have good fortifications, our standing armies have never been larger than 70K while they have 200K+ at times.

I think there may be a problem with the AI, perhaps there is a game AI file that need tweaking. It's not much challenge in the playgound when your worst enemy won't come near your sandpit!

Any ideas out there?

3 to 1 advantage in armies might seem too small for them anyway. DoW Poland or Hungary as case might be and fight them without rasing armies to replace casualties, and if the Turks aren't at war elsewhere they should come to their senses. :)

I am not shure, but I think that the DoWs of the AI is somewhat depending on nations stability. Nations with low staibilty are being DoW more often then nations with high stability. Maybe you have + 3 all the time while Mams and others often have a lower stability like + 1 . The turks would there fore DoW them instead of you, cause with low stabiity a nation is considered to be more weak by the AI.

To test this you could lower your stability to - 2 or something like that for a while. Maybe the turks would be more eager to wage war against you then... :)

Troop size I dont think make any different. Its the stability lvl, BB value and possible core-provinces that makes the different. Even relations seems to have a minor function when it comes to DoW. As I have experienced, only a - 200 relations hardly never led to a DoW... You need to tempt them with more... :D

 A moderator suggesting reloads?!? :p:D;)

I would have said more along the line of 'a lesson well taught, now you have learned something for the next game'. Still, you'd be hard pressed to loose more than four-five provinces, then you'd have five years to rearm and reap your vengeance

Problems would be if you only had six or eight provinces to start with.. :rolleyes

:)

Testing troop size isn't cheating in the same way as loading up after losing a battle. ;)

Besides, I'm here to give u options. ;)

Right, and right again :)

I'll agree with both you and Lord E then, first save, then see if your empire is going down the drain.

If it goes down the drain, try to save it, if it fails, consider it a lesson and reload if you want to, maybe disbanding troops again, but not as many :D

Thanks for all your advice. I played last night before reading these posts, but in the weekend I'll use my save game to deliberately try to get Turkey to DoW me. Stablity may be the issue, I always keep this at +3, and recover to +3 with max investments if it ever drops.

P.S. the game is still interesting. Turkey expanded strongly until 1600, into Egypt, Arabian Peninsular, Ukraine, and northern Persia, but the tide has now turned. Byz and Russian alliance has won wars in 1615 and 1622, and Byz has gained 4 provinces from Turkey. Even 2-province Georgia has taken a province from Turkey in the latest war!

I believe it was for several things...

1. Im still working on improvments and new scenarios for EU 1, in a time when people rather play EU 2

2. Cause Im defending the honor of EU 1 making fun and ridicolus comments... wont develop this issue deper... ;)

3. I have been embraced by the grace of the mighty Mod Carolus Rex, he who is forever watchfull... and so on :D

Well I believe this was the main criterias... I do hope nr 1 was the one weighted heaviest by the Mods :D
