That doesn't mean they were historical friends.

Genoa once raided and sacked the coast of the empire, killing a lot of people (cutting off noses and ears, filling buckets with them and sending them to the emperor as "gift") and enslaving others, just because a greek officer had slapped a genoese merchant after a chess match.

I wouldn't say Venice and Genoa were best buddies with Byzantium. Genoa did come to the aid of Byzantium before the siege of Constantinople and manned the walls alongside Byzantine soldiers until it fell. As for Venice, it pledged to send some ships, soldiers, and supplied to help break the siege. However the promise fell short and the ships never even left Venice. Had the Venetians actually sent the army, things could have turned out a little differently. Potentially even lifting the siege. But who know's how long Byzantium would have lasted after that.

That would just lead to Genoa losing Scio and Caffa, and Venice losing Crete and Negroponte.

Would it?

I ran few observe games where BYZ starts guaranteed by VEN and GEN. Wars just took bit longer and TUR didn't get enough war score to demand any provinces from VEN and GEN.

IME the AI rarely asks land from secondary participants.
It does in separate peaces. Venice will likely peace out when the Ottomans start sieging the core Venetian territories.

If the wars just took a bit longer, there isn't a point in adding the historical friend modifier anyways.

Even then -10 from ally in war and +100% warscore cost due to not being co-belligerent mean that the AI attacker usually wants to peace out for war reparations before the defender-allies are willing to give anything more.

I usually only see separate peace land grabs when a minor ally gets 100% occupied in long wars.

It was one of the very few times Venetians and Genoese worked together, bit redundant at that point ever since the Genoese transported the Ottomans over the Bosphorus for a tiny fee just to stick it to Venice and their better trade deals in Constantinople.

An enormous fee* (1 ducat per head).

Genoa and Venice weren't friends to Byzantium, or to the other byzantine rump states (such as Trebizond). Throughout their history Genoa and Venice were either at war / open hostilities with the byzantines, or had reduced them to a protectorate like in the last decades.

Not sure what you're talking about as Nikaea had close cooperation with Genoa to retake Constantinople (and received namely Galata for it). Constantinople had close cooperation with both for much of their existence and Genoa, which rivals them almost all the time, would lose a lot should the Byzantines fall (not that there's a difference in-game).

Yes, but the game does not cover the Middle Ages, it covers the Early Modern Period. The Venetians and Genoese were pretty much the only people who helped the Byzantines during the final siege, fighting alongside them on the walls, and making up a modest chunk of the actual fighting force. (Well, OK, admittedly the Venetian help was kinda dodgy, so not including them would be fine).

If the game began two hundred years earlier then I might agree with you. But in this context, it makes total sense to make them- or at least Genoa- friends of the Byzzies.

I am a Byzantophile. I love the ERE. I spend most of my time in CKII in Byzantium.
But, I am also a historian by education.

As well as giving Byzantium historical friends with Venice and Genoa.
.

Sacking of Constantinople:
"Despite their oaths and the threat of excommunication, the Venetians/Crusaders systematically violated the city's holy sanctuaries, destroying or stealing all they could lay hands on; nothing was spared, not even the tombs of the emperors inside the St Apostles church."

Such great friends :)

Yet even after that, Venice was on very good terms with Constantinople after the Palaiologos restoration. That one event doesn't mean all that much in geopolitical considerations. The people of the empire never trusted Latins after (they didn't really like them to begin with, to be honest), but the government worked very closely with the Italian republics, namely Venice, Genoa and Pisa (and the Pope too, especially under Konstantinos, but that one failed to produce much results).

Historical Friends was intended to make it easy for Byzantium to ally them.

In retrospect, it might be more accurate to have Genoa and Venice simply guaranteeing Byzantium.

This leaves Byzantium with the diplomatic slots to make alliances as it sees fit.

The Sack of Constantinople occurred in 1204.

In 1453, Venice and Genoa were both guaranteeing Byzantine independence.

1453 is 250 years after 1204 just in case you were wondering.

Why cripple Byzantium's initial economy from a gameplay perspective? I already never see an AI Byzantium survive a decade into the game.

Um, that sounds exactly like how it should work. The AI shouldn't be able to survive.
