Byzantine Usurpations

I noticed that the Byzantine Empire doesn't have many changes in dynasty or usurpers, and some people have been mentioning that on the forums. At the moment it seems that because only the family in charge gets claims, only they can control the throne unless somebody else marries into claims. Maybe there should be a plot for all (maybe just Greek?) Douxes and Despots in the Byzantine Empire to fabricate a claim on the Empire so that they can get a fabricated strong claim that doesn't get inherited (kind of like chancellor claims), but that they can use it to form a faction to take the crown. Maybe this would help simulate situations like Alexios Komnenos becoming emperor or any of the other major changes in dynasty and usurpations.

But that is how I became emperor! Plotted a claim on the empire as king of Serbia - I know I'm cheap...

Are members with Weak Claims able to have a faction to place them on the throne or is it just those with Strong Claims? If it's just a claim in general, then it doesn't sound "too" hard for a rival family to claim any empire.

In my Orthodox Sicily game I want to start making moves to position myself on the throne, but I didn't think you could fabricate Empire level claims, only counties and duchies. As the Doukas has made the Empire hereditary, how do I go about getting an Imperial claim?

What I did was start a faction for myself as the ruler of the empire, and started a civil war once I had enough supporters.

Is there a way to get a claim without supplicating myself before the throne first? I think I have enough influence amongst the Dukes that if I were a vassal I could get enough of them on board, I've been the destination for all exiled Byzantines so I've made many friends amongst the main Greek families.

But ideally I wanted to conquer from the outside if possible.

Marry the Empress.
Be warned, though; the concept of being ruled by a barbarian will motivate a Byzantine coup like nothing else.


I don't think factions can put an independent ruler into power, so looks like you need to Swear Fealty, Invade, or take the long, slow process of Usurping the title.
