I'm not a fan of what-if discussions in general, I find it more interesting to discuss real historical issues instead of whether or not the roman empire could've conquered the persian empire in the 400's and if so how much of it etc.

It's just useless speculation. But whatever floats your boat..

But even when you discuss what happened you discuss the decisions that got you to that point...its not 'this happened on this day- case closed'...its how/why/when...especially when considering personal choices of historical figures...what factors did and did not lead to event X...a lot of speculation.

Yeah, but those are real historical situations, not what-if's. You can come up with anything from uber emperors, the sudden invention of byzantine machine guns, to space aliens helping the byzantines taking back their heartland. A better question would be to discuss the military policies of Michael (I assume the VIII?) which was real.
