One pet project of mine I’ve been trying to make a primitive Byzantine mod for victoria. But so far my success has been fair at best. Along with help from other members of this community, i would really like to construct a quality Byzantine mod including a number of new things.

the projects goals

1. First the create the empire in the game files(I’ve already accomplished this)
2. Next write a series of events for the formation of the empire.( done this but have a small bug.)
3. Hopefully write a series of events for plausible future wars and events for the refounded empire.
4. create a new roman culture for the empire.
5. and anything else you guys can think of, such as creating that awesome purple color.

and of course certain questions need to be asked, such as:
1. Should only Greece have this even, or should Bulgaria and Serbia also be able to get this event?
2. What cultures should we write events to convert to Roman?
3. What Cores should this Empire have?
4. How should foreign powers react?

please post if your interested in helping or if you might want this mod

What I would like to see (And might throw together someday) is two alternate history scenarios with the Byzantine Empire.

In one, the Byzantine Empire would basically be a decaying giant, with territory similar to Rome at the height of it's expansion (Which they will almost immediately lose, no doubt.) The other, a much smaller (At it's core) Byzantine Empire would be on top of the world, providing hot competition for Britain.

I haven't figured out how an alternate WWI with the Byzantine Empire would work, though. But just thinking about Byzantine aces Vs. German aces tickles me to no end.

well......

my basic idea was that it should be possible for greece to claim to be the Byzantine empire if it does certain things, like prussia turns in to germany. it might also be possible for other countries too, like serbia, bulgaria or Albania, like what happens in italy. Of course they will get more cultures and cores

so basiclly no starting map change, but a series of events to form the new country.

any ya im no about crusader kings, but still its nice to be able to do something really cool with greece in victoria, i like the idea of taking a tiny little country and reforging the roman empire

Well, I'll try to create that awesome purple color. I shall try to set Greece's color to darkbrown, and see what happens...

EDIT: Not sucessfull. It doesn't seem like there's any purple country color in Victoria at all.

If you manage to make the Byzantine empire, it should be a color that's not used by many other countries, since the empire will probarly become a great power.

I would use the color that Belgium has right now since 1) Belgium shouldn't end up near Greece and 2) will only colonize congo if it ain't human played. Plus, the color is kinda' like purple-ish...

I've been thinking of the cores of the Byzantine Empire, and here's what I've come up with:

168409887.jpg

The purple ones are the Byzantine heartlands - the lands they will have cores on from start.

The pink ones should be given later via events.

Now, the orange ones could be given even later, and the orange ones with stripes I'm not sure about at all - but it would certainly be fun to have them! :D

This is a great idea - and definately something I missed in my Greece campaign.

1+2+3: What creates the empire? What is needed to control? Constantinople obviously (this should be control and not own as Greece would have to annex OE to get C). However controlling C is not enough. A lucky landing with a leader for quick control is obviously not enough. Greece should own/control a number of important provinces. What provinces will be ceded by OE to the Byzantine Empire (BE)
Also what are the consequences? Will Austria think this is a good new neighbour? Will they attack the newly formed BE for easy land? Will Russia see a new ally in BE (after all they DID create Romania and Bulgaria, which indicates that Russia's territorial ambitions in the Balkans might have lessened somehwat, so why not?).

4: Roman culture - why? And more importantly: how? The idea of a Roman culture was dead. But perhaps (since this is serious fantasy anyway) if BE does really well, and incorporates Bulgaria and Romania, perhaps some sense of a fake Roman nationalism could be created (perhaps through a seriously expensive propagande campaign).
Since the OE considered themselves the 3rd Rome, could the Turks also become a national culture for BE?

1: It would seem implausible for Serbia to WANT to become BE. And Bulgaria would have been a newly created nation, and ambitions of becoming an Empire is not very likely. I say stick to Greece.

2: Well, if that strange Roman culture should be revived (and I don't think is should). I guess Greek and Bulgarian - but since Romanian has taken that name from Roman, it would be an obvious inclusion.

3: Greece and (Western) Anatolia to begin with. Later on events should be made where BE can piss off/excite the world be reclaiming claims in Syria ->Palestine -> Egypt.

4: Well, a newly formed BE would not be large, and nations like Austria and Russia MIGHT see this as a positive thing as it would stabilize their southern border. But the reaction of everyone (especially UK and France) would depend on the guarantees that BE would give (what claims will be made in the future).

EDIT: if the Suez Channel has not yet been build and BE takes the adjacent provinces, perhaps BE could (re)gain some rep if they made it and opened it for everyone (after all their presence in Egypt would then suddenly be a positive boon for the world (well, for UK at least).

I must say that I am not too enthusiastic about claims on Italy (and Sicily) - and I guess there really shouldn't be actual CLAIMS on Egypt and Syria/Palestine either.
NONE of the peoples in these regions would voluntarily accept Byzantine rule, and it would be VERY hard for the BE to make anyone see the 'fairness' in them attacking these areas. In other words: BE can conquor these areas but must pay full BadBoy cost.

I am not sure where Bursa is, but there can be no doubt that if Greece controls Ankara and Constantinople, that the OE is brought to her knees. The question remains how much OE must cede to BE in the creation of the BE event (they cede an enormous amount in the Tsar of all Slavs event).
I like the idea of giving Russia the option (the AI should not be likely to choose it though) of letting Greece become BE. It should require good relations with Greece and Greece should have an event where they accept to become a satellite as well.

What is the argument that Russia allies with BE? BE must makes some concessions to please Russia: BE will not claim Armenia, Crimea, and other earlier BE-territories that are now under Russian rule. BE will let the orthodox church of Russia stay independent (prestige loss). BE will acknowledge Russia's claims as the 3rd Rome (note how this will seriously hamper Greece's (now BE) attempt at establishing themselves as the old Eastern Roman Empire.
If BE accepts all these conditions, then sure Russia will like their new little pet-almost-vassal-state. But if BE bows to these things - will they then be BE anymore?

Should BE become Russia's ally, then I could see how Austria would be interested in having peaceful relations with their new southern neighbour.

We should, however, remember that it is not very likely that the UK would appreciate another Great Mediterrenean Power. Some serious sucking up from BE might be necessary here as well (perhaps trading rights in the Black Sea could do the trick ... but how would Russia react to BE opening the back door to Crimea?)

Excellent AAR, though. Out of curiousity, what was in my post that made you think that was what I was looking for, or am I missing something?

If you are adding a Byzantium scenario where they managed to not get wiped out in the 1400's, I would suggest territory at the following levels.

1) If Byz done really well include Greece, bulgaria, modern turkey and as the map says-all the way down to sinai and possibly over the suez and into some of Egypt.
As for egypt/sinai as core/starting provinces, I dont see this as a huge problem. I dont recall ever reading of any particular civil unrest in these areas and I think modern Tunisia might have been allies (could be getting my facts mixed up on this bit) Then factor in hundreds of years of Byz rule (to year 1836) and this is fine.

2) A more realistic amount of territory would be as stated above but without suez or sinai.

3) I would forget modern Italy, the Byzantine Emperors as early as the 1100's had given up on reconquering Italy and Rome as a lost cause, mainly due to native population not considering themselves the same type of romans as the Byzantines and 'barbarian' kingdoms occupying the land (goths, franks??) (byz=heavily greek influence, Italy=not)

Green Marine had made all kind of events and stuff. It would be a greEEAt start for any such mod if they could be provided.

If GM reads this, please post the events somewhere where we can find them.

hmm i dont think thats right...*goes and plays with the files a bit* oh dear...the world is purple...everything is purple...the seas, the land the air..oh wait *takes off classes* yeah the entire world is purple...

in order to reproduce the cd-byz purple you first need to go to the ck\map directory, open colorscales.csv find the rgb values for byz purple in there and copy em.
next step is to go to viccy\map\ and take a backup of colorscales.csv. open it and find a suitable colour (you can use the country.csv to find one thats rarely used) replace its rgb values with those you copied from the ck file.
then all you need to do is assign this colour to what ever tag you are using to represent byz

if memory serves the number of colours is hardcoded which is why you have to go through this entire ordeal...i might be wrong though but i'm too lazy to check

Is the idea dead? It seems so ... too bad - it would have been cool recreating BE as Greece .... Although a 19th century BE ... it does seem kind of outdated ...
