Well finally after half a dozen false starts and frustrated deletions, I have finally completed updating the Vanilla Byzantine Mod. The mod is compatible with 1.4 and should not have any problems. That being said I have recieved strange error messages from one-time problems and I have seen that my code has been corrupted in a couple places; while I have been looking for these problems, I may not have found all of them.

Some notes:
I included the AIcolonyresolve.txt event file because I think its nifty.
I also included a background event that should fire Jan 3
Because of the extensive changes and revisions the mod can no longer simply overwrite files and keep them the same, so I have included in the install file the JSGME modswapper.

Readme:
Version 1.7 Vanilla
Just install this into your default Victoria folder, the original from paradox is C:\Program Files\Strategy First\Victoria. With the new patch, I have made enough changes

that I can no longer simply overwrite files. As such, for this to work you will need to use the JSGME modswapper, included in the mod. So long as you have the latest patch

for Victoria (1.4), this scenario will work without any problems. There should be no need to backup any files because the JSGME doesn't actually overwrite files to work.

If you want to change or update my mod I would just like some recognition for my efforts. And to keep you from being worried I only used unused country flags. Ruthenia is

an unused tag in the game, like SEI.

Changes in version 1.7
Made it compatible with the 1.4 patch
Changed most AI files to interact with the Byzantines
Completed the Byzantine AI
Added a Socialist Byzantium AI

Changes in version 1.6
Changed the Byzantine Flag
Added a several new events
Corrected over a dozen errors in my code

Changes in version 1.5
Completed conversion of event files
rewrote pop files for Greece and Turkey
more changes to the monarch list
Added continuity events between Victoria and Hearts of Iron II
Fixed scenario loadup screen

Changes in version 1.0
Converted Byzantine VIP into Byzantine Vanilla
Created an installer for the scenario

Finally while this seems redundent here is the background description I created:
In 1453, Mehmed II was captured and ransomed back to the Ottomans for a hefty ransom and large amounts of territory. From here the revitalized Byzantine Empire, under the rule of Constantine XI the Great, quickly recaptured Greece and the Aegean Sea. An alliance between Venice and the Byzantines allowed the Empire to quickly overrun the Ottomans and by the end of the 15th century all of Anatolia was added to the rapidly growing Empire. Despite a civil war in the early 16th century, the Mameluks were exiled from Egypt by 1650. The alliance between Venice and the Byzantines collapsed at this point when Venice seized Alexandria. A new alliance between Genoa and the Byzantines quickly brought Venice to its knees and all of the Venetian possessions in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea were ceded to the Byzantines. After these victories the Empire spent nearly a century securing its gains. Finally, in 1716, Alexius VI, later known as the Warrior Emperor, brought the Empire into direct conflict with the rising Austria by seizing large swaths of the Balkans. After a series of wars between the two powers, a peace treaty was signed in 1750 that created stable borders until the First Balkan War a century later. The final territorial expansion in the 18th century was under the leadership of Ioannes XI. In 1778, he led a series of expeditions to conquer Iraq and add the region to the Empire. Ioannes XI was also famous for beginning a series of reforms to modernize the Empire. Despite his attempts to create a western style economy, he strongly resisted all attempts at Westernizing the Empire. These reforms would have to wait for another century, until the rule of Emperor Ioannis XIV.

All you do is post it in this thread using the file upload option in the post message screen. It's toeward the bottom of the screen.

I think a full moderator will have to approve it first, so he should PM Dark Knight regarding it to get it OK'ed.

I may be mistaken, but I am pretty sure all uploads have to be approved first.

it says under the posting rules that I may not post attachments. anyone have any idea on how to change that?
Oh you are just a new guy and may not have the rights yet....hmmm

PM Dark Knight and see how to proceed if you do not have an alternate server to host it on.

comments

of course comments are welcome, I would like to improve this mod and I intend to release updated versions based on feedback and future releases of patchs and new VIP releases.

Oh and the edit was because I am a bit obsessive about grammer and spelling.

Completed Installer

well I have decided that installers make life easier. They work faster and are more foolproof. So i made one. It should be foolproof (I should know I tested it my reinstalling everything) so this may make things easier. That is of course if anyone is even interested. And even if no one is I still enjoyed making the installer so I dont care.

Happy gaming

edit: I'm a bit confused about posting rules so maybe someone could clear it up for me. Does it means I have to create a second thread where this mod could be discussed while keeping this thread for posting?

little question

for my next version of this mod I would like to make the scenario screen work properly for the Byzantine Empire. Does anyone know how to do that? also, is this the correct thread for comments and (hopefully) discussion of the mod or just posting?

moderators: you are great and merciful and i beg you forgiveness of my ignorance if this is not proper forum rules

alas i hate VIP and can never play the mod

Announcing version 2.0

Well since I released the first mod I have been looking over my code and I have found a lot of mistakes and errors. So now I have corrected them and am releasing this new version of the mod. I still dont have the scenario selection screen down but Im hoping to have that figured out by 3.0. I have included both the .exe and .zip files that were requested. That is because they are easy. In the next couple of days I would like to release a vanilla version of the mod. Im sure it wont be that hard, after all I just have to remove some code.

Vanilla version

Here is the vanilla version of the mod. Same thing as above, just install to your Victoria directory. this mod is made only to be compatible with Victoria 1.3, anything and I cannot predict what will work (well, mine will, others may not). But hey, any other requests give me something to do with my Sunday afternoons. So I would like the hear them.

Enjoy the mod

happy to make this mod more available, and maybe you could tell me what you think about, I would love a little feedback.

I like it, thanks much for the easy format to implement.

What's the historical basis for the Empire (if you thought of one)? It's pretty good-sized for the Sunni population to be 50+%. Are you going on the historical foundation of them "regaining" their territory after their decline, or never really having much of a decline in the first place?

Of course, I'm probably looking too much into it. I should learn to not look a gift-horse in the mouth.

But I really like it.

Thanks again.

in response

In 1453, Constantine XI captures Mehmed II and defeats the Ottoman. Then the Byzantines entered a long phase of slow expansion. By the end of the 1700, all of modern day Greece, Turkey, Egypt, Libya, Syria and Israel had been annexed as well as most of the Balkans and Iraq. However, a series of incompetent emperors began to lose control of Libya and many outlying regions. By the time of Napoleon the empire had lost present day Libya, the Black Sea coast, and their colonies in southern Italy. The Byzantines entered a new isolationist period trying to hold the empire together but causing it to fall behind on many technological and cultural developments.

So in answer to your question, they regained their empire and are losing it again. I am currently working on a basic Byzantine mod for HOI2 that I want to release in the next few days or so. I am making them tie in to try and eventually make a mod covering EUII all the way up to HOI2.

Thanks for the clarification! I rather like the background.

Of course, such an Empire would be difficult to hold together in the "modern" world.

As far as an HoI2 mod, I'd really enjoy that!

I was also curious about your choice of political systems. I take it you go with the historical interpretation that the Palaeologos dynasty wasn't as "representative" as say, the Komnenos?

Sorry to bother so much. I really, really do like it, though.
