Thanks for the clarification! I rather like the background.

Of course, such an Empire would be difficult to hold together in the "modern" world.

As far as an HoI2 mod, I'd really enjoy that!

I was also curious about your choice of political systems. I take it you go with the historical interpretation that the Palaeologos dynasty wasn't as "representative" as say, the Komnenos?

Sorry to bother so much. I really, really do like it, though.
Don't worry about the bother I am rather enjoying discussing all of the background I had created for this mod (I dont like having holes in my stories.)

and yes the empire would be much harder to hold, thus the First Balkan War, the Arab Civil War, German Unification, the Liberal revolution, The Balkan Uprising, the Russo-Byzantine War, and if you win that, the Socialist Civil War, the Persian-Byzantine War, The Tripoli War, the Second Balkan War, and finally World War I (I coded it.) So yes it is difficult in the modern world

and finally if you notice from that monarch list i included, the reigning dynasty is that Kapodistrias dynasty (I started researching great Greek statesmen to use as monarchs.)

Well, it would have to be preceeded by the P. Dynasty if we go from a victorious 1453 story, which is really what I meant to specify: there really hasn't been much of a return representative ("liberal") "Roman" system since the P.'s took over after Venice's betrayal?

Anyway, regardless, I wanted to ask one more question about the "Greek Alliance"? Any background on this?

Well then, no the Palaeologus dynasty never really returned to repsentation. However, in the next version of the mod (this will be released after my HOI2 mod is done and released), I will be adding events covering political reforms made by Ioannis XIV. Historically, he was the first President of Greece, and a strong supporter of democracy. I want to incorporate that into the mod.

Over the course of Victoria, representative government will be reintroduced into the Byzantine government.

While the Kapodistrias dynasty will cover primarily political events, I intend for the Coumoundouros dynasty to deal extensivly with economic development. Eventually I want events for every dynasty and emperor. While I realize its not the focus of Victoria I still like them.

And regarding the Greek Alliance, It is just the generic name I chose to represent the court without political parties. Once democracy is created, the Greek Alliance is a Conservative party aimed at keeping centralized power. I am considering making them the party of absolute monarchy and thus they will become a reactionary party.

Latest mod

Well here is version 2.1 of the VIP mod. I am hoping to release an update of the vanilla mod as well in the next few days. This will probably be the final release of the VIP version, unless anyone has any feedback on stuff to change. I may release a new version once I complete an EUII byzantine mod.

Here is my list of mods to do:
(Not in this order)
Vanilla Viki version 3.0
HOI2 version 2.0
EUII version 1.0

Final Vanilla mod

Well here is version 1.5, perhaps my final Byzantine Vanilla mod. I may release one more little mod down the road once i have completed my work on other games. I will say I am going to release another VIP version because I found an error last night while making this mod. Furthermore, this mod contains a much more complete set of events, in essence, unlike Vanilla version 1.0, 1.5 has a complete plot and the events in Hearts of Iron II should make more sense now. Enjoy and yes on the feedback

Hi just started to play your mod.

encounter a little bug, which you already be aware of,
you have 2 events that triggers the syrian independence event,
one of which creates Ruthenia(I think?) and one does not, but they both lead to event that requires the new nations to ally with Ruthenia, which might not exist depending on the triggering event, which caused my game to crash.

I just cloned the events and removed the reference to Ruthenia, and now I can move on in the game.

anyway I really like what I have played so far, I'm very much looking forward to your HOI2 mod.

Thus far I am loving it, your changes are excellent! A lot of my work was slap happy and on the fly, yours is much more grounded. :) Just a suggestion: personally, I would use the traditional Byzantine flag as the default and use the Greek flag for a republic. Had the Byzantines still been around, especially if they had never reverted to Greece at all, and even more especially if they were still a Monarchy, I don't see why they would change their flag. A republic most probably would because the traditional flag screams imperialism and monarchism.

I got the crash with the assasination of Ioannes too. The problem is that you have two events for the assassination, one that triggers the larger, and one the smaller, Civil War, but both trigger the same events which, as Uodoo mentioned, refer to RUT, but Turkey is only freed by the bigger Civil War, causing it to crash if you get the smaller one. On that matter, it seems that the game always picks the smaller one... and here inlies another problem. You have the two events set to trigger at the exact same date, but neither have any conditionals. Perhaps you should use something like pop militancy to decide which one you get? Or maybe if the player chose to go with allowing Turks in the army, thus gaining the state culture, will avoid having them secede?

Just another suggestion while I'm at it... I would add a big downside to allowing Turks into the army... like +6 - +8 militancy for Greeks and/or conservatives and a few random revolts. It's a big advantage with absolutely no reason not to choose it. Realistically, if the government had tried it, I think that the Greeks, with their extreme hatred of Turks, would've been rather irritated by the move.

Some more errors I found:

When the Austrians invade for the Balkan War, the event text for the Byzantines is exactly the same as what the Turks get when the Russians invade in normal VIP. Might want to change that. :)

The victory event for the Byzantines is broken too. I had barely taken 5 provinces when it triggered, and given the text, and the huge ramifications for the loser, I'm guessing you meant to include a high desperation and the capital as a trigger.

For the same event I would also suggest including in the text exactly what the treaty will do if you choose that option rather than fighting on. Not a big deal, but it's nice to know what exactly you're getting.

Thanks for the Feedback

I thought about using the traditional Byzantine flag, actually I agonized over which flags should be used for what. The problem with the two headed eagle on the flag is that it was the symbol of the Palaeologus Dynasty, and if you look, its the Kapodistrias dynasty at the start of the game, not the Palaeologus. And so I felt that using that flag would be inappropriate. That being said, the reigning monarch when the game opens is Ioannis XIV, who is based on a historical person, Ioannis Kapodistrias, first president of Greece and a strong reformer. I felt a simple cross would have been more to his liking. I had infered the Byzantine Flag changed with each dynasty, however if this is wrong just tell me and I will change it.

Funny thing, I actually switched all of the flags several times back and forth because I could not decide which I liked more, so if you have a good reason for wanted a different flag, let me know and I will probably change it.

I think I solved the Arab Civil War problem, I just removed the command to form an alliance with RUT from U10 and EGY, RUT still has the alliance command so if it exists everything works out, otherwise only U10 and EGY form alliances.

I have updated the early military reforms to include large penalties for allowing Turks into the army. I didn't include any revolts, but don't worry those will happen...

And finally, I have updated the First Balkan War events like you suggested.

If you have any other suggestions, I would love to hear them, while I have created a continuation mod in HoI2 and im working on a couple other, this mod has always been my primary interest and I would like to hear anything you have to say on it. After all it was your work that gave me the idea to create this mod.

Actually... there's something I'm stumped on. The Byzantines are my favourite Ancient/Medieval nation, and I know a fair amount about their history, but flags are something I know absolutely zilch about. I had assumed that the traditional Byzantine shield/flag, as in the one from EU2, was the one that they had always used... or at least the one they'd used since the fall of the Western Empire at any rate.

I'll keep posting my thoughts and suggestions as I play through. Just thought I'd better check, because you didn't mention, did you add triggers to decide whether the player gets the larger or smaller Civil War?

Flags

I have been looking into flags, it has been confusing, apparently, the two-headed eagle had become a universal symbol of the empire by its fall. It was also the symbol of the Paleogus (sp.) dynasty.

to quote my research:
"According to the history Michael VIII Paleologue adopted this symbol after he had reconquered Constantinople from the Crusaders in 1261. It represented looking towards the East (Asia Minor, traditional power center of the Byzantine-government in exile after the IVth Crusade) and theWest (newly reconquered land in Europe.)
The double-headed eagle had in the two centuries of Paleologue rule become identified not just with the dynasty but with the Empire itself and, more generally, with institutions and cultural ideas outside the Byzantine Empire that still remained centered on Constantinople."

So this means in the next release the default monarchy flag will have the two-headed eagle on it.

And if you look, the military reforms event has sleepevents dealing with the civil war, if the government allows Turks into the military, I decided it will begin a process of reconciliation that would mean the Turks would be less likely to revolt, thus deciding which civil war triggers.

Ah, excellent, solves the problem with the Civil War then, and glad to see you've come to a decision on the flag. :D

This has gotten me rather excited! In the future when I have more time (after the new year) I hope you might let me work with you to improve/add events and refine this into a truly great mod; not that it already isn't excellent!

So far here are some more errors I've noted:

- Occupation of North Africa needs fixing.
- Romanian Question doesn't make RUS cede Bacau (982).
- Romanian Question doesn't form Romania.
- Romanian Question triggers France Renigs for some reason.

Fixed

I fixed the Romanian Question events; the problem is a hold over from an earlier version of the mod, before i renumbered all of the events, and I guess a missed a couple triggers. Also, can you explain needs fixing?

I would love some help, I wont be releasing a new version of the mod until after finals and probably new years, I have been using your posts to refine it so anything you want to offer will be appreciated.

In the context of your changes the North African treaty is kind of outmoded, I think. Needs reworking in why the European nations were outraged and the effects of the treaty, in my opinion. Also the triggers are broken, it doesn't "do the rounds" as such and ask France, Spain and England to sign it. I got as far as England signing it and then nothing else triggered.

I also think that the way it works should be changes... i.e. currently it is dependent on each nation signing in a chain, so if England and France sign, but Spain doesn't then there is no event for a "partial treaty" as such, the event chain just stops. I think it would've been better for me to use flags so that if only one or two countries sign it then you can still achieve something from it.

Finally the free Sudan clause is redundant in VIP... probably anyway. I scripted it when I was playing Vanilla, and conquering Sudan was easy. In VIP you have a peace treaty due to the colonization bans, so it's unlikely you would waste 100 prestige and the BB to conquer a worthless three province African minor.

i am working on a way of rewriting the African Treaty events and I would appreciate input from anyone who has played.

to be honest, I have no idea how to make the treaty events work, so if anyone has an idea...

Also, I would like input about the Crimean War, initially I took it out because the arguement for war, that Orthodox Christians were being mistreated, wouldn't happen in this history. However, after reflection and research, I believe the Russians would still have declared war under a different pretense. This is because the Russians were expansionist at the time and wanted the region regardless of ownership. Any thoughts from anyone?
