Not sure if this is WAD or just a very strange occurrence. Playing as the Duke of Cherson, one of the only non-de jure lands controlled by the ERE, I managed to expand to occupy the entirety of Taurica and formed the Kingdom. Ok, things going fairly well, I added a bit more land, launching a holy war for Azov, and secured my position as one of the strongest vassals within the realm. Suddenly the Emperor dies (at 75), putting his wrong-culture son on the throne, which of course makes the natives restless. A faction appears wanting to put my sister-in-law on the throne at Constantinople, and I happily support it, as my brother is a bishop, so I shouldn't have to worry about any claims from his branch of the family, while putting my dynasty in a very strong position. 75% of the Empire agrees, we go to war, and win, putting the throne between my sister-in-law's rear and the ground.

This is where the problem arises. After winning the war, my Kingdom of Taurica is now independent of the ERE, and thanks to being a Queen, I cannot swear fealty to the new Basilissa, leaving me open to some serious hurt once the Cumans realize they can start trying to get their lands back. Is this an intended mechanic that non-de jure lands become forcefully independent once a liege is deposed for someone else? Would this have been avoided if I had not joined the faction and simply sat out the war, or would that have forced me independent as well?

Just trying to wrap my brain around what exactly caused this, so I can factor it in for decision making in future games.

Yes, afaik crown authority also bombs to autonomous vassals as well.
