So anyway as the title says, when my highly capable emperor died, his less talented but still capable took over and the entire empire basically fell apart into various independent duchies, for seemingly no reason. The vassals weren't really rebellious so i dont see any other logical reason why the empire would break apart aside from sheer chance. Anyone know the reasoning behind it and to enlighten me? im not really complaining that it happened, it's actually a pleasant surprise and challenge. i just want to know why it happened. thanks!

They simply stopped being vassals without a rebel war? Did you at least get claims? Sounds strange and if you didn't even get informed why I'd say it's a bug.

I have claims on those duchies...but they didnt rebel or anything, just instantly independent

The title still exists because the empire is still there, thrace and parts of anatolia, syria and italy is still part of the empire, the rest are independent duchies....im lost why it happened

I reload to see if the problem persists and sure enough, everytime that ruler dies the empire splits apart. Its actually annoying cause all that hard work for nothing. I dont mind if i lost it fairly but not to a bug in the game.

no i dont have the beta patches, i'm running version 2.1.4 with HIP using VIET. So anyway i decided to go with it and with my heir i went ahead and reunited almost all the provinces back into the empire and waited til my heir dies to see if the problem happens again but when he died, the empire stayed intact this time. So for some reason, it only fell apart when the previous emperor died.

my only guess as to why it happened was because i put quite a few vassals that were not my culture and religion in charge so maybe they became independent as a result of the emperors death, but that doesn't explain all the other nobles that had the same culture and religion as the emperor as well. they all rebelled too, except a few provinces that stayed loyal, i'd say about 80% of the duchies became independent without rebellions or notifications.

Could you share the save? I could try to figure it out if no one else does.

The emperor is with the fleet sailing back to the capital, he has ghonnorea and is ill, so he should die within the next two years or so at the most, but he usually dies within the year whenever i reloaded to test it out. anyway thanks for trying to help! i'm really just curious at this point how it happened.

Sorry about the late response. It's really a dilemma for me too. I think someone from the mod teams should have a look at it. Seems like a rare occurance since no one else ever had something like this.

i dont think he became pagan, though i stopped playing that game and uninstalled the mods so i dont really feel like starting it up again to check. But anyway i really doubt the title was destroyed because his Heir still had the title and parts of the empire was still there, just the majority became independent with no warning.
