Buying Waking the Tiger from China

This will surely have been said somewhere before but I can't find where in the forums this is said, so I will ask it again.

As everybody will be aware by now, the whole game has been banned in China, and if you try to access its Steam Store page from said country, it says not available. However, if you already own the game there is no problem installing and playing it. I heard that for those who already own the game, they can still purchase and play the expansion. I try to access the DLC page of HoI in Steam to buy waking the tiger, but it says that the game is not available in my location.

Anybody knows how I can purchase the expansion, if I can at all? I already own the base game and the previous expansions.

Chinese government are very...picky about what happened in China during WW2. From things like Sinkiang joining the Comintern, China getting annxed easily could even be one, Tibet not being a part of China.. Communist China not winning the war, etc. The game is against their propaganda, and as such was banned. Probably by some idiot in their government who wanted to do something purely for the sake of doing something.

Anyway OP: Buying it from the PDX store should work, as they will give you a key to activate on Steam.

It is not banned by China, but by steam itself. Tibet is not a cored territory of China in HOI4. So. VALVE self censored HOI4.

To be fair, I don't think Paradox ever said the exact reason it was banned. I imagine in was a mix of different issues.

Can you still direct link to the DLC page? I heard rumors that only the game itself is made unavailable, the DLCs are merely hidden, but that was a while ago.

The actual reason: the Chinese leader lost a game against the a.i. which infuriated him and in commie fuhrer directive 241 he ordered to ban the game for good. If he can't beat it, obviously nobody can, not even Jackie Chan.

Well it most definitely was for not following regulations. I just don't think the dev team ever confirmed the specifics.

If I were Paradox, I'd be tempted to find a way to sell the game in China regardless. There's nothing immoral about disobeying the laws of a non-democracy, and it's not like China could retaliate... they already banned the game lol.

Paradox said the decision was not made by themselves. So it could only be VALVE or China that banned HOIV in China.
I guess it is VALVE that feared about possible retaliation from China. Steam was selling millions of copies of PUBG into China at the time.

No, the location of the Steam store is set even if your ip shows a different location. That means that for Steam's sake, I am in China even if I log in from Europe legitimately. To change the location I think I need a billing address in the country in question, but I might be wrong.

Thanks for the idea, I did not think of that. If anyone could confirm that I will be able to insert the product ID that I would buy in Paradox Store into Steam, that would be great tho. Feels like a leap of faith right now.

Hong Kong and mainland China are two different universes, when it comes to the internet. Things are changing fast tho.

Well they will give you a Steam key when you buy the game. If it doesn't work, I'm sure you can request a refund. Give it a shot for me, please.

PDX store gives you Steam key on all HOI4 purchases. I bought WTT and had no issues. Should work unless Steam won't activate valid key for HOI4 based on ban by your Steam store location (set by address per comment above which I can confirm because I lived in Carribean and UK for 3 years as student and had to get permission to buy out of US store by coming in via a link provided by Steam).
