As I am currently between residences, I've got dial-up internet access (yes, you can still get dial-up) for the time being but I want to buy Victoria 2. Rather than wait the two or three days it would take to download it, even assuming I could stay connected that long, I was hoping I could take my laptop to a wifi hotspot, download it, and then transfer it to my desktop.

Is there a way I can do this? Thanks much. :)

I called the cable company a few days ago and they said it would take 3 weeks before they could get out to where I am. I'm moving out at the end of August, so for about $30, I'd have the sum of maybe two or three days of high-speed internet access. That's why I have dial-up for the time being.

Assuming you mean to buy it from Gamersgate - when you download the game everything is stored in a temporary folder, depending on your browser. After you download search your drive for "GamersGate temporary files" to find it. Inside that will be a folder which holds the install files - you need to copy this from the laptop to the same location on the desktop computer (if you use a different browser on each computer it may be a different location). Then log into Gamersgate from the desktop dialup and try to download the game - it will locate the temporary files and only need to download the setup executable (which will be very small) to install the game.

If you start to install the game on the laptop you can copy the setup exe without needing to log into gamersgate at all on the other computer. The setup exe is only created when you are logged into Gamersgate so you need to copy it before quitting the install process.

Hope this helps :)

If you can't access the net from the desktop, then you need to copy the temporary folder while the installer (not downloader) is running - this will copy the setup exe and you can install using that directly, instead of the downloader.

You might find it easier to just install the game on the laptop, and copy the entire Victoria 2 folder. It will run fine without being installed. (However you might have a problem if the 1.2 patch needs to detect installation, I think).

Why would downloading it and transferring it to you desktop be something you couldn't do? I assume you know how to move files across a network, or burn them to a CD?

Transferring the files is never the hard part. Figuring out what you need to transfer is (though Paradox setup programs are probably less finicky than most, if you haven't done this before you need to hunt down the temp files and installer).
