machine parts are hard to buy initially but after a while, say 10 years into a regular GC game, they start to appear on world market.

Just try to research yourself or make sure your prestige is high so you can buy them before others from the wrold market

This question comes up all the time. Maybe there should be a sticky for it? Nah—some new guys would still post before reading any FAQs.

It's int he manual VFAQ, and in rafiki's FAQ. I think that's plenty.

Has anyone else noticed the astoundingly poor efficiency of Machine Parts factories? For instance, in output, the top, white number is like 1.34, while the bottom, grey number is like 9? I observed this with a level 9 MP factory with the optimal mix of national-culture POPs, all larger than 50k, several capitalist POPs in the state, and 80% infrastructure. The other factories in the state, few of which had as optimal a mix of working POPs, were allproducing high than the lower grey (expected?) number.

yep i remarked it.

but i think it's quite normal, machine parts are really important and u don't want to have lots of country building factories and surpassing u cause u manufacture too much machine parts.

i think it's call game balance? ;)

They can't buy my machine parts when I'm using them to build ships, planes, and automobiles. Which I would like to have them for.

Speaking of this grey number in the factory output box (I hadn't actually noticed it before): what exactly does it represent?

I have. They also make very poor profits. I put my MP factory workers into steel mills when I don't need MPs.

I never get MPs from world market. I have to get them from techs or produce them myself. But it's really troublesome when I need steel to produce them. And there's no steel on the WM. And I need coal to produce steel. And I can't get coal from WM when I'm 13th in prestige :(.

I like that machine parts are not widely available, as they should be difficult to get IMO. In general I think shortages of products really stink if you're experienceing the shortage, but in real life they do occur.

So, my question is, if machine parts are intended to be produced in low quantities, why is the grey 100% efficiency number so high? Why not just put it down where it's supposed to be?

Not getting basic goods like coal lumber iron and steel for decades is not how it was in RL AFAIK. I like it too that machine parts are not available for everybody and small shortages are just fine IMO.

I haven't had any shortages of clothes or lux productions. It's only the basic goods that aren't in the WM.

The problem is that IRL a country can always buy a product, at least in peacetime, if its citizens are able and willing to pay the price. It can be frustrating to be an economic and military powerhouse and not be able to get mp's or any other goods, because IRL your citizens would be able to get it.

I think that IRL many countries were hampered by their lack of natual resources. This doesn't mean they couldn't get any at all, but it does mean that certain countries were not destined to benefit from the industrial revoultion as much as others.

Not as much as others maybe and in RL. In the game every country benefits from industrial revolution. Of course some benefit extremely much others only very much.

I'd buy my coal for double price to make my industry get started and build a few railroads. Heck, I'd buy prestige if I could. Argentina is now more prestigious than me, because it claimed patagonia. It probably gets my coals now. IRL the coal would be mine because I have 20 times Argentina's population 50 times Argentina's military and huge industrial potential.
