Remember those dark days of the late war as Germany, when fighting the US armour had nothing to do with it--your whole goal was to keep your elite panzer crews from being cooked alive by twenty-four US strike aircraft. Man, was that a pain. Extra flak guns, decoy units you might hope they would bomb and rocket, even hoping for some AA help from the halftracks. US artillery wasn't much fun either, when they'd lay a bunch of 8" and 155mm on you. Fire once from a position, then get the hell out of there before the FFE came pounding in. It was just a question of how long you could stave off doomsday.

SP2 was great as well. I spent many happy hours with my Israeli M-60 variants shooting down whole battalions of Arab tanks, tracks and even trucks.

jkk

My fav was always playing the USA vs. USSR WWIII campaign, buying up plenty of AAA halftracks to help mow-down the Russian hordes. :)

I'd be wary of anything by Gary Grigsby. His previous WWII games have a pre-determined path - the Axis forces degrade in quality as the war goes on, regardless of the situation at the front. This was the case in both "Second Front" and "Carrier Strike".

You mean a little like the leader death-dates in HoI2?

I've had several encounter's with GG, and have found him to be arrogant, and of the opinion that only he knows what happend in WW2.
He simply refuses to aknowlege that he can get things wrong.

That was sort of my guess, considering that the guy puts his name in the video game title :|

I picked up the game last evening and had the chance to mess around with the first tutorial for a bit before retiring for the night.

So far at least, things are looking pretty good. The game is somewhat more complicated then I anticipated but it does come with a thick and detailed manual as well as some in-game tutorials.

The option menu gives you a lot of choices in regulating the game's complexity. You have the ability to set varying supply rules, fog of war settings, production control, and general handicaps on a player by player basis.

I think that WaW's visual simularity to Axis & Allies is a little deceptive. The game is more substantial then the screen shots would lead one to believe. I'll play out the second tutorial tonight and then go into the breach with Germany.

It looks like a tragic mistake for Gary. His games have been excellent until this game. This looks like Axis & Allies 2 should have been. The two games are almost identical looking. If you don't mind shutting down the brain power to 10% it might be worth it. :) Maybe someday, probably soon, when it's in the discount bin i'll pick it up. ;)

You need to get int touch with reality man. This is not A&A in any way. Are all games that uses a map of Normandy with hexes all same game???

I have the game and it is great. I bet you will have a lot harder to win WW2 in this game than in HoI2.

But it should not be a choice of the two. If you have the money you should get both. Why should the other exclude the other?? Don't be a fool, get this game as well as HoI2 and enjoy them both.

I'm still waiting for "Road to Moscow". Last year I mailed Jeff Billings to ask about the development. He wrote, that it will be continued after he's settled a bit with his current business (strategy board games).

If you can get some people together over a table (you know, outside the computer :) ), then try World in Flames. It is the best grand-strategic World War 2 game ever made.

A computer version is in the works, the development of which was passed on to Matrix Games last I heard. I tried the open beta version they had and it looked like a superb PC porting of the game, absolutely G.R.E.A.T.

Well dont hate GG becuz hes arrogant, well i dont think he is... infact he been around for along time before any these classic and hotshots came around. I say way back in the 80's when i played his Warship game and it was awsome.

If you guys are not so sure about that WaW go download the demo when its ready and test it before buying it. That what i do. But still i prob wont get WaW just so many games i like to play and so little time.

My favorite would be...
1)WoW - this will keep me busy for along time :)
2)GuildWars/HOI2
3)MoO3

Even though I have no doubt that I will continue to prefer HOI2 to WaW, there are times when I like to play a simpler game. Axis & Allies is too simple and will never see the inside of my hard drive again, but WaW looks like it will fill a gaming niche that is currently vacant for me.

I actually liked the old Clash of Steel, but like so many older games, getting it to run on Win XP is either problematic or impossible.

If you have nor read the Wargamer review in the link further up in this thread, I recommend it.

On a side note, this game does not look at all like a Gary Grigsby title. I suspect that his name is mainly there for marketing purposes and that he did not have a lot to do with the development.

That would be Master of Orion 3.

I still think MOO1 was the best in the series but had one major lack. There was no MP cabaility at all, not even hot seat.

Rising Sun,

You're still playing MoO3? It took me a year to permanently retire it. If only Emerich had either narrowed the outline or had been given another year...

Did that user-mod improve it to playability? or do you actually enjoy it with the last patch before it was abandoned?

Looks like a fairly good/abstracted version of HOI2 (or a deeper version of Axis & Allies). Whatever it is, it looks like a good game to while away the next 3-4 weeks while waiting for 1.2. What do you think?

Anyone played the game that was just launched 28MAR yet? Any good? Reviews/previews are overwhelmingly positive.....

The Gary Bribsy game looks really cool. We used to play Axis & Allies boardgame all the time awhile ago so I really dig the look of this game. Thanks for posting this Xabi.

This is shaping up to be a keeper--very crisp and sharp.

It’s not HOI2, for example there’s no or little diplomacy. And even though you can play one of 5 countries/sides, it’s really a two-player game.

It’s a victory point, victory conditions game; the focus is on game play rather than drooling over OOBs and force org tables (fine by me).

It will be judged ultimately by how suspenseful, fun, and balanced it is, and how much replay ability it offers--time will tell.

In my first game as SU I thought I was doing fine until I ran out of supplies and everything--and I mean everything--ground to a halt. gg

I recommend Gary Grigsby's "War in Russia". As far as I remember it's the game he developed before "Pacific War" and you can get it for free from the Matrix homepage. (http://www.matrixgames.com/)

It's obviously only Barbarossa and a few campaigns like Stalingrad and Kursk going down to battalion level and includes economy to a certain extend. For all the people who are interested more in the military aspect of WW2 it's THE game for you. Beats HOI2 and everything else easily in this aspect.

I took a look at the forum at WAW, and they all seems to think that World at War is better than HoI2! So now we have two excellent WW2 grand strategic wargames coming in a few months!!

Edit: I just read the FAQ for WAW, and I can´t say it sounds any better than HoI2, just more abstracted and "dumbed-down": fewer units, no experience, no leaders, no build-up, no diplomacy, no minors. I think i stick to HoI2...
