You guys are ridiculous. I can tell that most of you haven't even read up on the game by your comments.
One guy said his decision was made by a screenshot that showed various troops aligned against one another.
You realize that this is simply a combat resolution screen and is no different than having a stack of counters arrayed against each other? All that screen does is show which units are involved in combat and which units get destroyed. It is still crunching all the same numbers we wargamers know and love, and you can turn off the combat resolution screens if you like.
YOu all act like it is an either or choice with HOI2 and WAW, well I think if you have the money and love wargaming you should buy both.
1. WAW will give you a faster game than HOI2 if you do not feel like playing a week long campaign.
2. HOI2 is wonderful because of its diplomacy, and "what if" element, however, sometimes I just feel like commanding the historical war, where Japan and Germany ALWAYS end up in the war. This is what WAW will be good for, when you feel like commanding the hictorical war rather than the what if war.
3. Simpler game mechanics generally lead to better AI.
4. The fast turn based style and shorter game lengths will make WAW a better choice for impromptu online games. HOI remains the best MP --IF-- you can find 5 or 6 intelligent people who have several hours to devote to the game.
5. I believe WAW is only 30 bucks, so why not?
6. I know it looks like Axis and Allies, but this is Gary Grigsby we are talking about here, and he WILL deliver a game with depth, that much I am certain.
7. THe more complex a game is, the better a game is as far as I'm concerned, but I don't always play complex games, sometimes I enjoy something a little lighter, and that is a good time for WAW.
8. Not only will the game be fun and prove most of you wrong, but purchasing it will help to support the wargame industry. I think most of us here are old enough to remember when the computer wargame industry died a few years back. Well, its back now and I suggest you get busy supporting it.
9. I looked into the game rather deeply, and like all of you, I choose HOI 2 first, but also like all of you, I think I've got plenty of room on my harddrive for another Gary Grigsby game as well.
