Looks like a fairly good/abstracted version of HOI2 (or a deeper version of Axis & Allies). Whatever it is, it looks like a good game to while away the next 3-4 weeks while waiting for 1.2. What do you think?

Anyone played the game that was just launched 28MAR yet? Any good? Reviews/previews are overwhelmingly positive.....

http://pc.ign.com/articles/594/594915p1.html?fromint=1

I dont trust singular reviews anymore, there is way to much fluff and pandering.

http://www.gamerankings.com/

Gives you a % based on the total reviews taken, seems a much better gauge to me. HOI2 got a 83.8 % which seems to be dead on. World at War has 85% rating but only a few reviews in.

I would wait on it, nothing in that game looks to be overwhelmingly better then HOI2, it looks slightly dumbed down if you ask me.

It might still be enjoyable and worth buying. If you feel that mainstream games aren't worth buying then you shouldn't even be playing HOI (or HOI2) -- you should buy War in the Pacific: The Struggle Against Japan 1941-1945 from Matrix Games (if you haven't already). It will satisfy your urge to get away from the mainstream.

Well i was gonna get it, but realize that HOI2 is out b4 this one. Anyway i didnt like A&A much and his game is pretty much like it. A&A is too primative to me and boring. Even A&A2 is kinda weird and still not that great.

One of his game back in '92 was great but lacking of sound fxs and graphics, that was called Gary Grisby's Pacific War and i loves it, infact almost as good as HOI back then.

I played the Japan and kicked all butts, wasnt easy tho. Japan couldnt really replace those capital warships like the American did. I did manage to land on US Pacific Coasts and all the way down to Austraila.

The Naval Battle is almost like Gary Grisby's Warship except its not in combat simulation or naval sims. It just popup a box show which ships were hit duing the raids. Well for this new one, the ocean will appear with ship on side by side will fight each others, now i didnt care for that... i rather see movement and engagements but that is impossible for RTS, unless pauses in between action/combat phases.

war in the pacific and other

I love big strategic games but "War in the pacific" is too much. The amount of detail is staggering. ( My copy is for sale). Now with some micro- management handled to the computer HOI 2 is very good. But it is so complex thet there will be always weird situations.

Concerning "World at war" is see it also as a game between HOI and Axis & Allies. Given the reputation of Gary Grisby i'm looking forward to buy it. A less complex game does not have to be easy.

The pc version of A&A crap. But it is a great game to play on a evening with friends. the latest version is the best.

Grigsby is a seminal name for e-grognards. It's a safe buy. Me, I'll probably hold out on it, though, as I barely have enough time to play HOI2, so bringing in something else is not going to work. Of course, I'm fairly satisfied with 1.1 (I do have issues, but they're issues I can live with and still play the game and refine strategy), so I'm not looking for a "Until 1.2" replacement.

Looks ok - might buy it to replace my Pz General II game time - something lighter that can be played in an evening. But I'd wait for the single player AI feedback first. There wasn't an awful lot of that in the beta AARs they published.

I'll probably pick it up. It might be a good gateway drug to lure some friends into strategy gaming.

Also, it looks like a good game for PBEM.

Hmm... think I might buy it actually. I mean, HOI2 is good, but having more games to play is always better. No game will hold my attention for ever.

As for Panzer General, I loved every one of those. Heck, even had a go at Fantasy General, or whatever that was called.

Still, as WW2 games go, my all time favourite has got to be Steel Panthers. (Including, yeah, the Matrix Games remake.)

Luckily that screenshot is from the optional battle mode, which can (and will be) turned off immediately.

I look at that and think "I sank your 105mm artillery!"

It reminds me of the game 'oregon trail' when you had to walk around in a 2d area and shoot deer, bear, etc..

If you are sceptical about GGWAW you might want to go to the Matrix site and check out some of the AAR's done by the beta testers. They are what convinced me that the game will be challenging and fun. I don't care for the iconic graphics (in HOI2 I use unit counters) but apart from that, there seems to be depth and challenge enough...and the price ain't bad either.
