area North of Mongolia was predominantly pagan\shamanist at the time of the game, with the growth of Buddhist influence during Qing dynasty's rule over Tyva and Mongolia.

Islam was introduced to the area only during the later years of Russian Empire & Soviet Era, during worker migrations, that's why there are some Muslim villages today around Novosibirsk & Krasnoyarsk city areas. There are Sunni Muslims also in south-east area of Altay republic (Kosagash or Kosh-agachskiy rayon) where ethnic Kazakhs live.

But this is all a result mostly XX c. events.

That's why presence of Islam in Buryatia and other areas to the north of Mongolia is gravely inaccurate, and should be addressed by the developers

I believe you're right on the substance, but I giggled at calling this 'grave'.

Its pretty much as inconsequential as a database bug can be, as these are empty provinces, which will swap to the culture of whomever takes them first. Their culture could be Aztec_Siberian_Colonial and it'd have zero impact on the game :)

But it doesn't make sense to make Buryatia Sunni, whereas the rest of the area is Shamanist. It's like putting Sunni into Patagonia. It doesn't make sense.

That's exactly my point. Something so clearly visible on the world map can be solved by a minute of editing of history\scenario files. It's a crime to overlook something that can be solved so easily.
