I've been playing a Burgundy game and it's somewhat frustrating how opaque the succession process is.
First time around I accepted to become a PU under France. There's no indication to the player in event pop-ups or whatever that this is different from any other PU. A few months later suddenly the low countries are independent, without any kind of warning or pop up. That's odd.
I go back and play another round. This time I accept a PU under Austria. This time I think to check the HRE interface and I realize there's an Imperial Incident with multiple possible outcomes. I guess last time the incident caused me to lose the low countries. I can't influence the incident at all, but I'm a PU junior, so okay, I don't have a lot of agency. That makes sense.
This time the incident resolves by Austria fighting France to keep me as a PU. Austria wins. Sure. There's still no indication that after this point it will behave differently from any other PU. A couple years later I get an event that Marie of Burgundy has died and the only option I'm given is to declare war against Austria, who has like six different allies and collectively 4x as many troops as I do.
Fundamentally I get the idea that a PU junior may not have a lot of choice about their circumstances. The problem is that there are existing mechanics for PU's and the player isn't given any notice that the Burgundian PU will work any differently. Checking the HRE interface gives a little bit of info but not the full story. How should I know that upon Marie's death (not that she's my ruler anymore; she doesn't seem to exist in the game at this point) I will have to fight Austria? In any other PU this wouldn't be the case, and I could actually prepare and request support from other countries before fighting an independence war.
So I guess my suggestion is that while playing as Burgundy, there should be events that keep the player appraised of the situation both with the incident and what will happen upon Marie's death so they can actually plan ahead. It's unfair to expect the player to assume that being under a PU as Burgundy will somehow be fundamentally different from being under a PU as any other country.
