Prelude to War Jan 1936 to Mar 1938

Private Diary – Todor Georgiev – Bulgarian Chief of Staff

January 1st 1936

Why is it when the King is drunk he gets these crazy ideas in his head? Naturally, last night the King had a new year’s party at the palace and all the prominent members of the government were present. The alcohol was flowing and everything was well mannered, even if the King was in a bit of a grump from his trip to Greece, the reason as to why was to become apparent later.
So it was around 1:00 when one of the civil servants asked the King how his trip had gone. His reply, which lasted nearly an hour, was a rant about how several of the Greek ‘nobility’ had laughed at him having the smallest Bulgarian ‘empire’ to have ever existed! Of course while he was relating this story he became somewhat agitated and ended up ordering the entire cabinet into his private meeting room.

We were in there for several hours, during which time we all sobered up. The message from the King was simple, he wants the Bulgarian empire back and he thinks the rise of Hitler in Germany is going to lead to a world climate in which we can act. As I said earlier it’s a crazy idea!

Of course I told him our Army is backward and still uses its equipment from WW1! Not to mention we actually don’t have an air force or navy to speak of or the capacity to build one and/or research one! He didn’t care.... his response, ‘Find a way Todor, I don’t care how, just do it!’. Fantastic I thought.

I retired to a smaller room with the ministers and together we outlined a plan. Before we even think about expanding our borders we need a modern(ish) army. Our ability to modernise is limited and its clear we can’t have everything. After much debate it was settled that we will focus on the Infantry and in particular develop our special forces in the form of mountain infantry which will have an enormous advantage in the terrain around here! Expanding the army much beyond its current size is limited but the amount of recruits we have, hopefully we’ll be able to increase that in the coming years!
Vasil (at this time he is the Chief of the Air Force) convinced me to invest some research time in tactical bombers, expanding our strategic options. We’ll also immediately commence building of some troop transports for the Navy, although developing combat ships seems to be all but impossible.

At this point Georgi Kioseivanov (our Foreign Minister) come up with a fantastic idea, at least his was for his thick head! We could align ourselves close to one of the major powers and negotiate production licences for their ships and tanks! SO now the question is which power? The UK and USA distrust us immensely, as we are part of the pseudo ‘eastern bloc’ and even with great relations it would be all but impossible to negotiate any licences. Germany and Italy arn’t interested in trading with us since they are consuming all the raw materials she can at the moment rebuilding their armed forces – the more I think about this the more I think the world is going to war again! That left our neighbour... the Russians, hardly known for their ship building skills but never mind. So, Georgi is now setting up numerous trade deals with the Russians for the resources our growing industry needs and hopefully in the future this will lead to some kind of navy for us!

Finally, Georgi Sapov (Minister of Security) has informed me he has set our spy network in such a manner to maximise the number of spies in Greece and at home in order to drum up enough popular support to make a war feasible without a civil war! He estimates we’ll be ready in early 1938 – that gives me two year to prepare for war against Greece!

June 1st 1936

I’ve reorganized out army as follows....

General Bakyrdjiev heads the High Command.

1st Army – ‘The Border Guards’ – led by Vulkov
3 Divisions each with 3 brigades of Infantry.

2nd Army – led by Marinkov
3 Divisions each with 3 brigades of Infantry
Plus one brigades of ancient artillery!

3rd Army – led by Murnov
2 Divisions each with 3 brigades of Infantry

I disbanded our ancient Calvary regiments, we simply don’t have the resources and they are already outdated. The army has primarily been deployed along the Greek border. I fear the worst!

HoI3_2.jpg

August 7th 1936

We’ve finished preparing the arrangements to train our infantry in specialist mountain combat – I immediately commissioned the training of 3 divisions each consisting of 3 brigades. We are also well on the way upgrading our infantry to the latest weaponry, the troops are impressed and seem to sense something is going to happen. One trooper I spoke too asked me what’s was going on, I just replied it was routine upgrades his response put me in high spirits. He said, ‘Well, with all due respect Sir, I’m ready to go and kick some Greek butt! Bulgaria WILL be great once more!’.

I forgot to mention last month I was at the launching of the first of our transport craft to be commanded by admiral Variclechkov. The King was mightly impressed by the fine vessels but after the celebrations the admiral looked me in the eye and said, ‘Now get me something to protect them with as if we launch now these are going straight to the bottom of the Black Sea. I looked at him rather glumly, but his point was valid. I spoke to Georgi the next day and he told me the Russians still aren’t interested in selling their technology – hopefully one day soon!

January 5th 1937

Bombers! Who would have thought it? We’ve finalized the plans for a squadron of the planes and I just gave the go ahead for production. Madness! Naturally the King is head of heels and is already planning the parties he going to have in Athens. Maybe this will work?
On a rather more ominous note several countries have declared their allegiance with Germany. These include Italy and Hungary. If we get on the wrong side of Germany there simply isn’t going to be anything left of our country and I’ll be almost certainly dead.....

March 7th 1937

Well today marks a fantastic achievement for our glorious nation. Our mountain infantry brigades have just left basic training! To say they look mean is somewhat of an understatement. These guys are just what our army needs! One brigade has gone into the 2nd Army and two into the 3rd Army.
Georgi informed me today that we have reached our full trading capacity with the Russians and that they are beginning to accept us as allies. Still no movement on the ships though. Hopefully its only a matter of time!
I’ve also had news that New Zeland, Australia, South Africa and Ireland have aligned themselves with the UK and Japan has allied with Germany. A war is brewing that much is certain, the King was right. Maybe we can steal the Balkans from under their noses....

Alright, a different minor enters the fray! (Although the date in the title threw me off a little.) A good write-up.

A quick 15-months and ready for a test of the Bulgarian forces.

Good luck! Hope you get some escorts from SU soon so you can use them more than once. It would be a waste if they rusted at the docks.

That was a very nice first post on these boards. Welcome! :)

Well, it seems there'll be at least another round of Bulgarian-Greek military discussions. It could make for an enjoyable read.

What mod are you using for your counters?

Doh! Heaven knows why I put 1986 (and there is no way to edit it :(). Even if I get ships from the SU there probably going to be rust buckets anyway but nevermind - they might be good enough for a few well timed invasions!

Thanks very much :). Hopefully it will, I really enoyed writing it! I was inspired by several ARR's on the forum.

I'm using modestus's counter backgrounds.

Thanks to both.

I'm hoping for bi-weekly (or more often) updates. I'm probably outnumbered 2:1 in Greece so it could be a VERY short ARR. :)

So I had a power cut last night while my game was saving..... the save file was corrupt :(. Rather stupidly I forgot to turn on the autosave since my last reinstall so my last back save was in early 1937.

Its a shame since I'd pretty much conquered Greece but nevermind! I guess I have to do it again now. I've edited my posts back to 1937. It did seem like aligning with the Russains wasn't going anywhere at all though so I've binned that idea as you will see when I post my update.

April 21st 1937

Our efforts with the soviets are not going well despite over a year and a half of constant trades and other diplomatic efforts. The King also announced that he had agreed for one of his nieces to be married to a soviet General, his names escapes me now. But all this seems for nothing as they are still utterly unwilling to share any of their technology with us! Despite the fact we have shunned this ‘Axis’ alliance of Italy and Germany both are more willing to share technology that the damned Russians!

Needless to say the King is not pleased and in another fit of raged used a phrase most unbecoming of his position, ‘F**k the Soviets’. Hopefully word of this doesn’t reach the Soviet government otherwise the consequences will be dire I’m sure. He has instructed us to change our diplomatic stance and align with the Wehrmacht and her allies. Initial indications show great promise, despite our earlier efforts we had not drifted far from their corner and so should be a fully fledge member relatively soon. Weaning ourselves off of all the raw materials we are receiving from the Soviet Union will take some time though and the Axis alliance isn’t exactly flush with resources!

This new stance we undoubtedly bring us into direct conflict with the English and French, a daunting proposition with the English controlled Suez Canal and French controlled Beirut just across the Mediterranean. Of course this thinking is somewhat presumptuous of me.... We still have the Greeks to deal with and Intelligence confirms there army is certainly larger than ours by some degree!

I’ve also received news that our Infantry weapons are finally being upgraded! And about time too! They were using pre-20th century technology!! We are equipping them with a 1909 rifle firing the 9mm Lebel rounds, still hardly ground breaking but it’s a start.

June 13th 1937

More new weapons for the troops! The 7.7 cm Krupp artillery gun developed in 1916 is being replaced with 1915 7.5 cm Skoda artillery gun. We are also replacing the old 8 mm Schwarzlose machine gun with the newer Rheinmetall MK 108 machine gun. I’ve attached picture comparisons for future reference. The soldiers know war is coming; they’re not stupid, why else would all these weapon upgrades be coming thick and fast? Were also developing an amazing looking weapon called the semi-automatic machine gun! If this research comes to fruitation our army will be impressive indeed!

August 18th 1937

Another weapon upgrade the 7.92mm Steyer antitank gun has been replaced with the xxx. I don’t think these weapons are going to see a tank for some time BUT it boosts the men’s moral to have such impressive weapons! Research has commenced on the 8cm Skoda light artillery gun and the 7.7 mm Vickers machine gun..... My God these weapons take warfare to an entirely new level!

Diplomatic relations with Germany are progressing at a rate which was entirely unexpected! We’ve sourced our coal from Germany, rare materials from Italy and all the metal we need from Hungary. The king was right... F**k the Soviets!

September 10th 1937

Unexpected news!! Today we were officially invited into the German alliance! Hitler himself visited our country and gave a long speech to a HUGE crowd in the Bulgarian capital. He said that despite our earlier transgressions we are accepted with warm hearts and it is hoped the collaboration between our governments with be entirely positive.

This development has led all the Axis members to offer their technology to us for next to nothing! SO much to choose from! I’m heading over to a meeting with the King and other senior government members now to put together a plan of action within the week.

Marrying a niece to a Soviet general? :p

So it's Axis Bulgaria. It sorts of sounds as if there was going to be war on short order.

September 22nd 1937

We’ve been in negotiations with the Japanese and they have agreed to allow us to construct three light cruisers based on their designs! The deal was cheap at $160 and an excellent investment for Bulgaria! At the moment our factories are concentrating on the production of a new tactical bomber wing, this has been put on hold and the cruiser production has been given priority. These ships will give us the protection we need to launch small naval invasions of our enemies in the future which will have great tactical importance I’m sure. We will also gain valuable experience in building cruiser type vessels, opening the opportunity to research and build their heavier cousins in the future to give our fleets a bigger punch! Sava Ivanov has obviously championed this idea.

It appears our induction into the Axis hasn’t gone unnoticed by our neighbours. Our border patrols have noticed an increased military presence along both our Romanian and Yugoslavian border. However, by far the biggest increase has been along our Greek border..... This might have something to do with the entire Bulgarian military being currently deployed along the front.... Its seems I could have been more subtle with our military build up.

Another semi-unexpected consequence of joining the Axis is that it made a politically much closer to war. Georgi sent me a memo saying this was entirely expected... it would have been nice for him to give me a heads-up so I could prepare the armed forces!! So today I gave the order to mobilize the Royal Guards and the Black Guards (the 2nd and 3rd armies). Unfortunately we don’t have enough recruits to fully mobilize the Household Guard (the 1st Army, formally The Border Guards) and thus they will remain at half strength.

The invasion of Greece has been codenamed Operation Zeus. It is split into two phases, phases 1 involves the isolation of Greek troops in the north and phase 2 is the assault on Athens itself. The objective of Phase 1 is to isolate the majority of the Greek army by taking advantage of the geography of the Greek-Bulgarian border. The Royal and Black Guards, comprising of 24 regiments (almost our entire Army), will storm the mountain fortress of Giannitsa before rolling through and taking the province of Meliki. Once these are in Bulgarian hands the troops in north east Greece will be without supplies and will eventually be forced to surrender.

In parallel the 1st and 2nd Household Guard Divisions will storm the mountain fortress of Serres pinning the Greek troops down until the 1st Black Mountain Division can be diverted from the assault on Giannitsa and attack the enemy form the rear.

The plan seems watertight. The Greeks will be unprepared and we should be able to defeat the larger unprepared Greek army while taking minimal losses ourselves!

10th October 1937

The King declared war earlier today! He wants to prove to our new friends how strong our little country is and so hasn’t asked for their help. We understand they are watching with great interest! I shall write more later, for now I have to go and oversee the offense. The generals know there orders though so I expect little trouble. The Bulgarian empire shall rise again!

Yes its is. Its strange its sooo hard to get the russains to accept you considering bulgaria's stance in the war but hey ho. As long as the Bulgarian empire expands everthing else is mute! :)

1st December 1937

Last week the Greek province of Kilkis fell to the combined forces of the 2nd and 3rd armies! The battle was fierce with 10,000 men lost two thirds of them Greek. Combined with the progress by the 1st Household Artillery Division in the east the Greek forces are pinned in the province of Salonica. I will give the order for the final assault within days to force the surrender of the mighty Greek army, they are without supplies and I dare say frightened....
The majority of the 2nd and 3rd armies will begin marching down the east coast of Greece towards Athens to force the surrender of the Greek government; I imagine they will only have piecemeal resistance along the route.

Picture3.jpg

4th December 1937

I ordered the final assault on the Greek army in Salonica today. Their army, 19 regiments in total some 80000 men, is staving and has lost a lot of its will to fight. The House Guards along with two other divisions, five in total, will attack. I don’t imagine the battle to be quick but hopefully it will be relatively bloodless.

31st December 1937

Greece has fallen! Almost two years to the day since that fateful New Years Eve party at the kings place! Last week the majority of the Greek army surrendered at the battle of Salonica after over three weeks of fighting. Some 6000 Greek troops died on the battlefield and another 80000 surrendered to the brave troops from the Household guard. The 2nd army marched down east coast fighting several battles on the way but none lasted more than two days. Earlier today our troops marched the streets of Athens after the defending garrison pulled out leaving their government and commanders to our mercy.

We annexed their territory and expanded the new Bulgarian empire. Their factories and mines have put into production for us boosting our economy. I’m attending another New Year’s party at the palace tonight its promises to be a joyous occasion! Here’s hoping the King has no new bright ideas. Although I must say his last one turned out really quite well.

HoI3_8.jpg

1st January 1938

Oh My God! The King was obviously jubilant last night but one of the first things he said to me was, ‘So when are we having this party in Beograd’?.... Needless to say I was gobsmacked! Athens only fell yesterday! I immediately explained Greece was a cake walk compared to what Yugoslavia would be. 1) Their army is MUCH bigger than ours. 2) The geography of their country makes isolating troops difficult, even more so given the size. 3) Our Intel informs us they have several fast cavalry regiments for which we have no counter. Of course this all fell on deaf ears! The King just smiled and told me I gave him a similar story last time. Which of course I did and I was as right then as I am now! I tried to argue my point further but he just said he doesn’t want to hear anymore and he expects the battle plans on his desk by the end of the month! What have I got myself into?!

31st January 1938

So with much reluctance this morning I presented my battle plan to the king this morning. But before I discuss that in detail I thought I’d mention an interesting diplomatic development that happened earlier this month. German troops marched unopposed (some say even welcomed!?) into Austria earlier in the month. Hitler then declared the countries united! United!? I mean really! The Austrians had no choice but to let the troops in! Germany has the military power to remove the country from the map and raise all the cities to the ground, if they came knocking at our door in the same manner I’m sure the King would do the same and who could blame him?

But anyways war now seems inevitable despite claims coming from Britain of the contrary and I fear our alliance with the Germans is going to bring us right into the middle of it!

So the plan... it’s bold even by my recent standards. We can’t fight the Yugoslavians in a long pitched war; we simply don’t have the basic infantry or the tactical mobility. So I want to make them think we are just going for a quick dash to capture their important cities including the capital and seat of government Beograd. To this end I’ve deployed the 2nd Army, the Royal Guards, to the northern edge of our borders and the 1st and 3rd Armies to the south. The overall strategy is for both armies to advance west as quickly as possible, heading for the Yugoslavian cities, but leaving an obvious open pocket between them. Hopefully, this pocket will be too tempting for the Yugoslavian commanders and their troops will poor in. There thinking being we only left the gap because we don’t have enough men (which is partially true!) and so they should take full advantage. The advancing armies will then double back and seal the Yugoslavians supply lines before advancing on their rear and forcing their surrender. As I said a bold plan...

The 1st and 3rd Armies primary objective is to capture the province of Plav. It contains a highly defensible river basin and is perfect to launch the circling attack from; in the process they will also capture the important province of Skopje. The 2nd army will head straight towards Beograd with the objective of capturing the river provinces of Jagodina and Pozarevac. Obviously divisions will be left to guard the supply lines at the armies advance. Once these objectives are complete both armies will wait and see if the Yugoslavians take the bait before initiating a pincer movement in which the 1st and 3rd armies meet the 2nd and then proceed to advance on the enemy troops from the rear. We are going to need all the luck in the world and a forgiving God to pull this off!

13th March 1938

Today was the planned date for the declaration of war against Yugoslavia and commencement of Operation Laser, however I have successfully petitioned the King to withhold hostilities due to recent technological advances. We have made advances in small arms, light artillery and support weapons. At this moment we have begun deploying the semi-automatic machine gun (SMG), xxx and xxx it’s expected to take approximately two months. Thus we are planning for a mid-June assault. I explained to the King that these weapons would give us the technological edge over our neighbours and greatly improve our long odds of winning the war! This extra delay will also allow us to build up a reserve of recruits to reinforce our armies.

11th July 1938

Last month I order the assault on Yugoslavia, at the time if you asked me if I was confident of victory I probably would have laughed however even you asked me now I’d answer, ’Well maybe’. Since the start of the war the 1st and 3rd armies easily accomplished their primary objective of taking the river province of Plav. The 2nd army has also made amazing progress in the north of the country taking the target river provinces of Jagodina and Pozarevac. I attribute this early progress to the fact the Yugoslavian armies were not in a battle ready state, which I must say is awful considering our recent aggressive behaviour towards Greece. Had I been in charge of the Yugoslavian armies I would have had them battle ready ASAP after the invasion of Greece!

But anyway I digress; the Yugoslavians appear to be taking the bait and are beginning to funnel their troops into the centre of the pocket we have created. As soon as the majority of their army is in the pocket we will try and close it and surround their troops. While this is the plan the 2nd Army in the North is already facing stiff resistance from Yugoslavian troops around Beograd and may have to retreat before the pincer plan can be enacted!
During the advance two divisions of Yugoslavian infantry were surrounded and forced to surrender. A minor victory but a welcome one none the less.

On another note the Yugoslavian airforce is taking full advantage of their air supremancy and is bombing the hell out of our troops. Our tactical bomber division will be ready soon but we won't have any air cover for a long time if ever!

Picture4-1.jpg

1st August 1938

Last week I ordered the three armies to being circling the Yugoslavian troops in the pocket. The 1st and 3rd armies made excellent progress in the south quickly taking two provinces. However, the 2nd Army in the north faced heavy resistance forcing it to withdraw leaving the 1st and 3rd armies to close the gap by themselves. The 2nd army was reduced to a pinning role ensuring some of the Yugoslavian troops remained in the pocket. The 1st Black Guard infantry division is also slowly marching west closing the pocket. To say things hang in the balance would be a gross understatement! Many times divisions (on both sides!) have been on the brink of defeat before being receiving fresh reinforcements. Another worry is that ALL are military divisions are involved in the offensive leaving our cities completely unprotected. This is of course a massive risk but without all available men the offensive would never succeed.

One thing is certain IF we win this war I will be petitioning the King to request permission to build some German armoured vehicles to make this type of offensive much more rapid in the future!

Oddly enough wars of maneuver are much easier to conduct when you have elements which can outmaneuver the enemy... :p

I'd think of licensing some Messerschmidts at some point in the future too...
