The cities are fictional and and are based on what the map maker wanted, but the buildings are adaptions from the base models of the original game. Since Co wanted the game to take place in modern times they reused only the modern buildings, of which a majority were included with the US cities DLC but there are also a lot of buildings that were originally in the Tokyo expansion and a few from the base game. The actual cities themselves are just new cities with new buildings, although there is a North American influence on a lot of those buildings. Also, the large city in a majority of the screen shots looks more like a large developed Asian, or South American city than a North American one.

I'm pretty sure I heard in either a dev diary or video that cities would be based off American themes, but, whatever.

Pitty, I was afraid that CiM2 will be american-like style:-(. I liked also in CiM or old Traffic Giant the european style (of course, when I live in it) and yes, also the maps, where are villages and town (probably better in the Traffic Giant than in CiM 1).

Well let's really hope that like there was American DLC/expansion for CiM1, we will have European one for the CiM2. I will see, how soon I will buy the CiM2 (but maybe for the american feeling, because I did not like the american expansion for CiM 1 and I will play still CiM1 with 3D cameras mods etc. to have european cities).

I didn't like many dlcs/expansion packs to Cities in Motion 1 either. However, the Tokyo addition was pretty wholesome :)

There are tons of Art Deco buildings in CIM2. Art Deco buildings aren't modern, they date back to the 1920's or 1930's.

Most Paris Haussmannian buildings have been built in the 1900's, which means they are only 20 years older than Art Deco scrapers from NYC.

But anyway, I hardly see what in the game mechanics would prevent creating a city with an older city center and making it grow modern. Let's hope for upcoming DLC's indeed.

The game is based in the time period 2013 and beyond, therefore, heritage buildings and architecture wouldn't suit well for a newly built town centre.. unless it's already existed before the 2000s!

But alot of the buildings in CIM2 look like 1970's concrete tower blocks and pre-war tenements. For a truly authentic city some older bildings are needed, unless we are all playing in dubai! Besides, near where I live alot of new buildings are built in older styles to better fit with their surroundings (mock tudor style, 1930's art deco style etc.)

I still hope for a european style DLC.

Well yes... but we could still start with preexisting cities which have heritage buildings in their center and only grow modern during the game. That would be kind of realistic to me and also quite fun.

It's not so hard to do, importing blockhaus buildings from CIM1 would be enough to satisfy me. They wouldn't appear when the city grows during the game, only modern buildings would, but they would still add some soul to the preexisting cities.

Isn't the game capable of letting us mod in buildings too? Or is that totally out of the realm of what we'll be able to mod in CiM2?

A good idea is to put some older buildings into the map editor (both for being placed by the player and for being generated), and prevent them from appearing during progression and dynamic changes.

That's the only thing I don't like too much about CiM2: the American style of the cities. But I can relate that CO wants to target the US market. I just hope for modders and DLCs to bring lots of European style fin-de-siècle buildings over time - they simply look much better.

Exactly - it is nice to have city with old buildings and modern skyscraper-like, american-like in the sourroundings, or sometimes even near the center. That is what I liked about CiM1.
