Ok, so I've built shipyards in the city and church of my capital. But still no ships are available to me, despite waiting.

Can anyone help me build ships? I've looked for this info in the game manual and the Wiki and in other resources, but none of them explain how to do it.

Thanks.

I'm guessing the city and church are vassals of yours? The total amount that can be raised will be affected by the laws/obligations that are set for burghers and church.

On the other hand if they're your direct holdings, the ships will take a while to replenish, just like levies. Also, if those holdings are the wrong type - for example if you're feudal then cities and churches are considered wrong types - there is probably a levy penalty meaning even less ships will be available.

Just for some reference, recently when playing as a Norse tribal leader, ships were replenishing at 3 every 2 months in my holding, and that was with a high martial marshall training troops which boosts levy replenishment... which may or not affect ships but I assume it does.

Hi - many thanks.

The city and church are my direct holdings, as far as I can tell. I can't see anything about levy penalties.

My vassals can contribute 2 ships, but I am making none. Here's my saved game, are you able to see what's wrong? Is it perhaps because I'm over my demesne limit? But I think not, as I'm still generating troop levies.

Cheers!

Sorry I can't load up the game to check right now. But it's more than likely because those are your direct holdings and you get a penalty. When you click the city and church, look at the levy number details, it should show a penalty modifier for the troop types, and more than likely that same penalty is applied to your ships. I mean, if that's the case then your ships might be available after 2 or 3 years waiting.

Why not build a shipyard in your main castle? Those should be ready for you much faster

Also: Don't raise your ships. Ships don't replenish while raised. (which makes building a shipyard an exercise in waiting for the next couple of years.)

Park your Marshall there and have them doing the Replenish/Increase Levy job. Then just wait, and wait, and wait.

Also, without looking at your save... you do know that wrong holding penalties come into effect right? That's -75% Levies, which will more or less gut your ship count.

Thanks, guys. Not sure I have any wrong holdings penalties.

I eventually got a few ships after building a shipyard in my capital castle. But it was only a few ships and they took ages to appear. Mostly I relied on my vassals ships which were in much greater numbers and appeared much more quickly (and I don't know why).

I've now achieved my aim of becoming King of Brittany in less than 100 years (did it in 80). Only Nantes is not held by me, so I have 5/6 of the Breton counties, plus Cornwall and Devon to form my second duchy.

The Cornish king made it much easier for me by navally invading me as soon as a declared war on him for Cornwall and Devon. Instead of combining all his men and defending his lands with a single force, he sent two smaller armies into my lands, which I defeated easily in turn with my much bigger army (included mercs). Then I simply popped over the Channel and sieged down his defenceless holdings.

So much for the logical calculating power of the AI...!

Also, the cost of making the King of Brittany title went suddenly from 336 gold to 164 gold, and I have no idea why.

:)

The cost of creating kingdoms and empires is influenced by your Piety. The more you have the cheaper it is.

Ships from your own demesne cost a fortune in maintenance while raised so I only ever use vassal levy boats unless I'm really desperate to get the whole force there in one go. They do seem to replenish really slowly too, so I also make sure to bring them in to port before disbanding so as not to lose any unnecessarily.

Lol, well I need the ships to mount an overseas invasion...

: ) Absolutely the right thing its the ONLY thing to do with navies. One of the sheer joys of naval activitiesy in this game is the Santander to Plymouth route. I often load a few dozen cornishmen into the ferry and let em loose in Asturias, just like the real thing! Sometimes they go to St Malo in Breizh and recently towards Cork in beautiful Ireland. Again like the real thing!

That's navies in CK for you. Don't worry about it.

If you are feudal, and you're holding a City and a Church, you have wrong holdings penalties. Everyone playable except for Iqta gets a penalty on Churches, and everyone except for Republics gets a penalty on Cities.

My favorite targets as Petty King of Dál Riata (tribal Catholic Irish in the 769 start with early tech bonuses that make it really easy to build a tribal shipyard before the Norse freebies launch) were Hwicce, Brittany, and Morocco.
