I just wanted to share with you my thoughts on how they could improve trade posts/colonies.
I would remove the trading post as an option and only send colonists (100 people) to provinces. The level 1 colony would have a port, be vulnerable to being burned down, and have the ability to build a "trading post" and a "fort". The fort would obviously allow protection from being burned down or being taken by enemy troops as well as surpressing native attacks. The trading post would provide a large trade bonus, but does not increase the maximum trade value of the province. So a level 1 colony might have a trade value of 3 (23 with trading post), level 2 would have 13 (23 with trading post), level 3 would have 23 (23 with trading post) and a level 4 would have a value of 33, and so on...
I think paradox should also make colony improvements cost different amounts for different countries. That way trading post structures could be affordable for Portugal. I wonder why they didn't do that already for other city improvements (fortifications, mayors, etc).
