I just wanted to share with you my thoughts on how they could improve trade posts/colonies.

I would remove the trading post as an option and only send colonists (100 people) to provinces. The level 1 colony would have a port, be vulnerable to being burned down, and have the ability to build a "trading post" and a "fort". The fort would obviously allow protection from being burned down or being taken by enemy troops as well as surpressing native attacks. The trading post would provide a large trade bonus, but does not increase the maximum trade value of the province. So a level 1 colony might have a trade value of 3 (23 with trading post), level 2 would have 13 (23 with trading post), level 3 would have 23 (23 with trading post) and a level 4 would have a value of 33, and so on...

I think paradox should also make colony improvements cost different amounts for different countries. That way trading post structures could be affordable for Portugal. I wonder why they didn't do that already for other city improvements (fortifications, mayors, etc).

I don't see any reason why you shouldn't need colonist. AS it stand, the game makes you pay for colonist so the "free" colonization the Enflish got through this era doesn't exist- the King didn't foot the bill for the Mayflower. By making colonists able to build forts you can at least come up with some rationale for the cost of colonists- it is the cost of the small carde of men and cannon that would man a colonial fort.

I don't agree. Colonists were generally families of would-be farmers and settlers, not soldiers and fort-builders. I would prefer the fort-building option to come once you have a certain number of troops successfully unloaded in the province.

I basically agree with you- I frankly don't think you should have to pay for colonist at all since most were private ventures that often paid the crown for the rights to their land but since you do have to pay for them I'd just as soon have that money spent buying me a fort rather than just repsresenting nothing at all.
