Releasing nations in Italy when trying to reign in Italy means that you have to also reign in the nations that you release.
To me this is obviously because script shenanigans but you think it should be kept this way or changed so they count as being reigned in?

I literally just noticed this about an hour ago today and thought the same thing. I'm not a fan. Double points if Modena was also the tag you noticed it with.

Nope, you've given them autonomy now you make sure they don't get too autonomous. You have an opinion bonus for releasing them anyway so it's easy as a medium skilled player

EDIT, it's only those in the HRE, so releasing papal state vassals doesn't matter unless they join the hre

What is the strategy for keeping them in now? Do you just start improving relations with Italian tags at game start?

I allied two, declared two wars against a total of four tags including allies, beat another as an ally in an unrelated war, and improved relations with a couple. A couple more got eaten by the others. So really a mixed bag, but it wasn't bad, and I was done in 1461, less than a year after the incident fired.

The first war was with Ferrara because you can fabricate on them across your shared see zone (as Austria, of course). I took Nizza from their ally Savoy so I could fabricate a claim on someone on the west side. Ymmv with who allies whom, but I just looked for who didn't have big allies and allied or improved relations with the rest.

I don't understand what the new requirements are. The old way to rein in Italy was to conquer or feed specific provinces to HRE princes or for yourself as the emperor.

The one time I did it, I just waited, while improving, up tothe moment I would be able to ally every single one, allied them all, reigned them in, and broke all the non wanted alliances before the monthly tick.

Oh, so ally them, have 150 relations, or have signed any peace deal with them better than white peace, with you as the war leader. You don't need to conquer anything from them.
