AI Demands Unknown Provinces, Offers Provinces Winner Cannot See

When the AI has been moderately successful in a war, they will sometimes demand your worst province, or a profitable colony. Unfortunately, this can result in the AI demanding a province that it actually has no knowledge of.

Also, at the end of a war, the AI will sometimes offer provinces the player cannot see. This isn't too terrible of a problem, except that I am unaware of the status of the problem with controlling provinces you cannot see. (A while ago there was a bug where rebels that the player cannot see would sometimes defect to him, this resulted in a possessed province the player couldn't see.)

The solution is fairly simple - upon changing ownership of a province grant the new owner knowledge of the province, and before the AI demands a province make a check that it knows it exists.

are you absolutely sure that if you recieve unknown provinces in peace-deals they are not revealed to you??

I don't know with defections.


But if you get a bunch of spanish colonies as a landlocked Bohemia for instance.

You gain the knowledge of the colonies whereabouts, but not how you get there!

(and they can be hard to spot, on little dot of land in the great black field)

Sure, but is that a bug? As long as they become known if they actually end up part of the peace settlement I don't see the problem.

It certainly leads to some strange behavior, particularly when AI nations fight eachother. Mostly this is in the area of completely innapropriate colonies (China in east USA, Denmark in Qatar, etc...) - it might actually help out the AI a bit if it didn't do this.

Oh. So the problem is not in demanding unknown provinces as such, but remote ones, whether unknown or not?

Fot the part of recieving unknown provinces I can be of help.

Assume they offer you the province of El Paso and that this province is unknown to you. When you then press the OK button and accept the peace offer you will instantly get a pop up message box telling you

"You have discovered El Paso"

You can then select the "Go To" button in the box and the province will be centered on your screen, as clearly visible as are all known provinces.

We did, but consider the problems caused when, for example, Sweden demands parts of Kamchatka from Russia in a peace deal, even though they have no idea where it is.

Sure the province will be explored when they get it, but soon they will start generating explorers there, and having a base of operations in a completely wrong place. Not only that, and that it looks ugly, but they will also be generating trade and stuff even though they have no idea how to get there.

Kinda silly.

I don't think it is a bug.

It is sometimes weird, but it is the only way that big nations losing war exchange TPs and colonies one each other (most of the times unknown by the other). And that is fairly historical.

Any fix will probably introduce more problems than it will resolve...

The first part seems rather moot now, but the I stand by the second claim - "Before the AI demands a province make a check that it knows it exists."

Yes, the AI in this situation should be running under the same restraints as a human.
